Neff Fan Assisted Oven Tripping RCCB

I have a problem with my Neff B1442N/10/GB Electric Oven. On certain oven settings, it trips the RCCB immediately.

My immediate thought was a faulty element with an earth leakage, but as I thought about it I became puzzled.

I believe that the oven has three elements – grill, fan and bottom.

The RCCB trips immediately if any of these oven settings are selected

Circotherm (fan assisted)
Grill large area
Grill small area

The RCCB does not trip if either of these oven settings are selecetd

TopBottom heat (convential)
Bottom heat (convential)

My immediate thought was that the grill element is faulty.

But what is confusing me is why is the Circotherm setting casuing the RCCB to trip as I didn’t think it used the grill element.

If it were the fan element that had gone then that would explain the Circotherm tripping but hot the grill tripping.

I can’t imagine that two elements have failed at identical times.

Any ideas?

without meters the fastest way of finding out is disconnection

disconnect each element in turn and see if tripping stops

Yes I guess I’m going to do that – was hoping to be able to just reason it out and then order the right bit.

What about measuring resistance. What’s the best test to do – I guess measure between terminal and earth – looking for infinite for a good one – I guess to trip the RCCB there needs to be at least 30mA so anything less than 800 ohms would do it.

Solved. Took it apart which was surprisingly easy and disconnected each of the elements in turn.

All the elements share a common side (neutral I assume) which will be why I’m getting trips for different elements.

Two things still puzzle me though

(i) The failed element is the bottom oven which we have never used

(ii) With the faulty element in place, the fan oven and the grill oven trip but the bottom one doesn’t.

Anyway, since we don’t use the bottom oven, I’ve left it disconnected for now.

Will replace it in slower time.

if elements are not used they can soak up moisture over time which will make them trip

you can heat the element that may dry it out and get it working again

Really? Is that wise? What amount of heat is required? And, without a test meter, how will I know if the problem has resolved itself?

which is why i used the word “may”
only the other week I cured an oven that was tripping that had been sat in a garage for 12 months

got elements out put them in another oven at 200 degrees for 2 hours

it was common place 2 remove earth from a DAMP ELLEMENT for 15 mins get nice and hot and replace earth for an appliance that had been stood in a damp environment ie new build not sold for 18 months
