    Hello.

I recently replaced the thermostat in my fridge, and while doing so broke the light bulb. I decided to replace the 15W incandescent with a 1.5W LED bulb. It’s a bit dimmer but does the job well enough. The problem is that it won’t go off. I don’t see why the type of bulb should make a difference, but maybe it does. I wondered if the old bulb had been on all the time too and I’d never noticed, but I’d have to buy another incandescent to try it. Adding to the confusion, I wondered if the door switch was faulty, so popped it out, and I can’t understand how it does anything. it makes no electrical connection. It’s just plastic with a metal piece which seems to act only as a spring. The housing in which it sits is also entirely plastic. The part is on this site as SKU #00029486.

I’m at least glad in the meantime that the LED bulb is using 1/10 of the electricity and putting out a lot less heat than the old bulb if on all the time with the door closed.

Could changing from incandescent to LED have caused this? And how on earth does that door switch work? Any insight would be gratefully received.

    Thank you.

your model is wrong and I cant find the part number you list for the part but

had a case in a house about 6 months ago. it was an upstairs room with 6 lamps in the ceiling controlled by a dimmer. The customer had changed the lamps to led’s and found the lamps would not switch off. I found if I replaced one of the lamps with an incandescent lamp everything worked normally. What was going on was the dimmer had a small leakage current. When incandescent lamps were fitted this current was so low that it could not illuminate the lamp but change to led and this current was enough to cause all the lamps to glow continuously

it is likely this is probably your problem as its likely the lamp is controlled by the board

the only thing I can think of is that’s not really a switch

does it have a small magnet inside it ?

if yes it will be operating a reed sw

looking at a similar fridge ( we cant look at your model because am in UK ) looks like its a series of rods and the switch may well be part for the lampholder

    Dave,

Just realised I missed the last part of your last post.

    I am also in UK.

Your diagram looks exactly like my fridge, at least the parts I can see.
Does this diagram come with any other information as to the part numbering?

I can confirm that there is no switch inside the lampholder. I have had that entire unit off the wall to replace the thermostat.
The only connection from the lamp/thermostat housing to the rest of the fridge is via three electrical pins. Two of those are the live into the thermostat and the switched output to the compressor. I assumed the third was ground, but maybe it’s the switched line to the light (it does not connect into the thermostat at all). If so, the switch is behind the fridge wall.

I think I’ll get an incandescent bulb and see how that goes. If it works then the rest is just curiosity.

    Thanks again.
