    Hi,

A customer has asked me to take a look at her Neff S5453X1GB/50 dishwasher that won’t pump out the water.

I quickly (as I was on my way to another job) had a look at the machine, when it starts up (after reset) I could hear a faint / dull humm.
After a gentle flick of the impeller on the pump (well, I’m assuming it was the pump – by the salt chamber) and reseting the machine, on closing the door the pump ran, but no water seemed to be removed.

I’ve not had one of these animals apart before, so before I jump in both feet first, is there a filter that needs checking before I attempt a pump replacement?

Any help or nudge in the right direction would be appreciated.

    Thanks
    Dave

Dave, normally ‘no empty’ on these is due to pump being jammed by a foreign object ie broken glass/ bits of plastic/bone, or a blockage in the outlet hose where it goes into the side chamber on left hand side. Remember the pump won’t pump anything if you haven’t replaced the cover in the sump ! Also check for blockages in the side chamber (normally fat). If all else fails the pump is twist off, easy access through the front . Wizard

    Thanks for that wizzard.

I’ll take a look in that direction.

Did you or the customer remove the water manually from the appliance whilst it was still halfway through a cycle ? You will need to reset the appliance electronically otherwise it will continue to run its cycle but as its empty of water it will never move on through that cycle . When the wash motor runs empty of water , it will sound like the pump is running.

To reset , look at the selector buttons and there should be 2 buttons with dots above them….press these 2 together and the end light or ‘0’ should come up and the machine will then drain. Open door , switch off , switch on , close door and the appliance should then be ready to start a new cycle.

    Thanks nomadPaul,

I did reset the machine using the two buttons, and the end light did come on.

    Turned off > on
Selected a program and closed the door.

It sounded like the drain pump noise started as soon as the door was closed after selecting a new cycle, then after a few seconds the sound of water inrush started.

The machine then started its washing cycle with water in the sump.

    Does that sound about right?

    Thanks

Sounds good so far – correct water level is between the bottom and halfway up the salt cap.

    Thanks Penguin45,

From what I can recall that too sounds about right.

The more I hear the more I’m err’ing towards the probable causes that wizard put forward.

Unless of course – the pump is faulty.

    I do have one question!
The non-return valve (flap or whatever it is), could that be causing any problems?
Well I say the non return valve – the 5 or 6mm thick rubbery plastic cartridge that slots in adjacent to the pump rotor.

    Thanks

Re: Neff S5453X1GB/50 Dishwasher not pumping out

If the drain pump is actually running and it’s not draining, there are several possibilities.

1/ Old, tired drain pump. It is after all just a magnetic drain pump motor like any other today.
2/ Blockage in the matrix. Over the years I have had several with bits of glass in the outlet side of the matrix – almost impossible to see.
3/ Drain hose collapsed due to bad install.
4/ Sink couplings – always good for a laugh.

The flap valve has never caused me any problems. You can remove it without causing a drop in pump pressure if you wanted to double check.

    Chris.

    Thanks Chris,

I wouldn’t be surprised if it is a “very tired” pump motor to be honest.
I’d be tired if my Mrs had me washing up for regular dinner parties for 20 – 30 people!

    Thanks again
    Dave
