Neff S72M63x1gb/55 stopped mid cycle, no display, mains OK.

modules may look the same but can be loaded with different software. even one model different could use different software so unless its from an identical unit with exactly the same part number it may not work properly

I would have thought that the software would be in the control module. Is there software in the power module as well? If that is the case, how do I source a compatible replacement?

go to diag 5 item 0570 in the parts list its has a programmed and unprogrammed option. since bosch engineers only have the ability to programme the programmed option is the only one but at £170 its not cheap
