ParticipantMy hob bleaps and flashes E on all display when I place pan of water on ring and switch on. I am using the correct size and type of pan, which has always worked in the past. Same effect on all size pans.
The instruction book suggests dirty work surface or ‘object’ on work surface. Neither applies. Neff support suggest if pan is OK I should book engineer visit.
If I switch on, set temp of required hob and then place pan on works OK!!
Hob is 2 years and 6 weeks since purchase, so out of Neff warranty, is this planned obsolescence or what??

There are a couple of things it could be. Simplest and cheapest for you is that the childlock has been activated, the book should tell you how to switch this on and off, or it could need a damn good clean around the control areas (even if it looks clean, it is worth 10 minutes) Otherwise it is in need of at least 1 of the internal P.C boards.
As for your other question, the fact it is just out of warranty is plain unlucky, nothing more nothing less.
If the cleaning or childlock solution does not work then I would suggest booking an engineer to undertake the work. (the parts are not cheap).October 11, 2009 at 2:18 pm #299272cornfield17

Child locks are off. Worktops have been thoroughly cleaned.
I do not agree it is bad luck. It is a product which is clearly unsuitable for purpose.
It would be reasonable to expect a cooker of this supposed quality to last for at least the six years suggested in the Sale of Goods Act 1979.
Manufacturers warranty is of little significance, as the consumers contract is with the retailer, who is responsible for up to 6 years. I shall be addressing the problem to them.

ParticipantWhy ask the question if you dont want an educated answer? If the appliance was unsuitable for purpose it would not have cooked your food for the last two years and 6 weeks. Appliances are NOT designed to go wrong just outside of warranty as some people claim, unfortunatly in this not so perfect world, things go wrong and need repairing… Good luck with your retailer.

Hi cornfield 17
I would take a look at this article on consumer rights about a quarter way down which explains the six year issue before you visit the retailer 😉

So, Hammertime thinks that I should be grateful that this high tech, high cost device from a high end manufacturer can manage to function for just over two years without failing, when used by two elderly retired people!
It is that attitude among consumers that allows such companies to get away with making tat. If I wanted tat I could buy that (for half the price) and throw it away when it broke down after two years.
Incidently, my last two cookers each worked OK for in excess of ten years.
With regard to ‘planned obsolescence’, having worked for 48 years in industry I can assure Hammertime that it widespread across many industries. Some call it ‘value engineering’ but be assured that is value to the manufacturer not the consummer. The cheaper the manufacturing cost consistant with the product failing outside guarantee the better.
Hammertime should not be so niave

Cornfield, I dont seem to remember saying you should be grateful for anything, but it is certainly the last time I will be taking time out to offer you some very educated advice!!
I didnt realise that expensive products didnt go wrong, makes you wonder why they even offer a two year warranty (which is already over and above the normal year) if they never fail!! I was not being naive, merely pointing out a simple fact that things do go wrong! I have a question for you, if you have so much experiance in the industry regarding your so called ‘planned obselence’ then why are you so shocked that it has gone wrong? surely that would be the norm if what you say is anywhere near true!October 14, 2009 at 12:37 pm #299277cornfield17
