    Hi,
First, thanks in advance for any advice.

    Model: Neff V5340X0GB/04 Washer Dryer
    Age: apx. 9-10 years old

We have only really used the machine for washing, and over the last few months, there would be the occasional rubber burning smell if the load was unbalanced. Occasional noise too but otherwise just normal cycle churn sound.

Recently started seeing little rubber grey bits, but drum still rotated fine when turned by hand with no friction.

Today, a really strong burnt rubber smell and part of the grey rubber door seal has been sheared off. Turning the drum by hand now results in the occasional friction squeek or grind.

I read that this might be the ‘arm'(?)supporting the drum gradually wearing down or breaking, causing the drum to not sit dead centre, and thus rubbing against the door seal and now creating enough friction to tear off part of the rubber. Is this the right conclusion to make?

Normally prefer to repair rather than buy, but as I had no idea how much something like this would cost, was wondering if it’s worth having it repaired or not?

    To summarise:
    1. What might be the problem causing the drum to rub against the seal?
    2. Is this easily repairable, or is it better to replace the machine? Given its now nearly Christmas, this has definitely come at a slightly awkward time.

Thanks very much for any help/advice 🙂

Ps we do a service wash every so often and use products such as Dr Beckmann or similar own brand sometimes.

you may need other parts as well but the spider is the main problem. if you do go for it strip it before you order as you should have stopped using it before now and you dont know what you will damage stripping it

Hi Dave, thanks very much for your reply!

Sorry it’s taken a while to respond, but I thought I’d wait till the Neff engineer visited so that I could give a full update, in case others have the same issue.

The engineer came, but didn’t really do any testing or dismantling, but spun the drum round with his hand.

He thought it needed a new drum, support cross (as you’d advised), gasket and also possibly the bearings. In addition, to fix it he would want to order and install a new heating element (amongst other bits) as he said, this is what he would need to do to make sure nothing else fails in the next year (as part of the one year warranty) although we haven’t had any issues with thr element thus far.

The quote for the repair ended up being just over £800 including parts and labour.

I am not sure what to make of his diagnostic, but given it is roughly in line with your advice and the high cost of the repair, it looks like a new one would be more economical, as once all these parts are replaced (even the working ones) it’s actually the cost of a new machine and more!

Thanks again for your help. Now to look up some decent offers while factoring in installation costs for an integrated machine. Such a shame that it costs so much to repair.

So how much did the manufacturers charge to tell you what you already knew that it would be a expensive drum repair if you don’t mind me asking?

    @boselecta
: thanks for your message. I opted for the payment plan from Neff, otherwise the call out charge would have been £99.

I know it sounds naive to think that a drum repair would be straightforward. I am definitely no expert in washing machines, so was not aware it could be that much cost wise for a drum repair (thinking it was just the drum support and the gasket, so reckoned would be around £400 including labour)

It sounded like it was a common thing to order in other parts too just in case they needed repairing. So the cost started adding up.

My only experience with such repairs is on a freestanding machine we owned sometime ago, which only needed the motor and belt changing by the engineer- so it made sense to have it repaired, rather than throw it away and buy a new one. Was hoping it might be the same this time round.
