ParticipantHi all,
I have recently set-up self employed and been hard at work delivering leaflets and all the rest of it, While doin this i have come across some people with the attitude that washing machine repair is pointless as they can get a new washing machine for £100 ( im thinking argos or online) has anyone else had this with potential customers??

It depends almost entirely on the area you are doing the leaflet drop. Confine your efforts to more affluent areas where no-one would consider even going to Argos let alone buying their stuff. Poor areas result in poor feedback and even less custom.

poor areas can also result in not wanting to pay call out charges
in other words tell us whats wrong with it so we can fix it lolFebruary 27, 2013 at 5:14 pm #391137Cras

Lots of people hold this view until there machine goes wrong then its an emergency and as long as you can attend quickly and repair the machine quickly its amazing how they change there tune ,saves them the hassle of buying new one 🙂 and i agree target the more affluent areas .Cras

I target affluent areas where there are Bosch, Neff and Siemens.
I found poor areas tend to scrap the machine and buy another one on credit. More often than not it’s the quality of the work trumps in my case than quantity of work if you have to take into account of fuel costs.
Someone suggested quantity trumps over quality so you can pick and choose. Depends what you want out of it.

Don’t even bother with Council estates, they’d rather buy on the never never than have something repaired. Did a leaflet drop on a small local council estate a few weeks back, drove through there earlier & see 5 houses with appliances outside waiting for the scrap man. Not 1 repair enquiry from the whole estate though.

You could have collected scrap machines. £8 each.

Could have but I don’t have a Licence for re-cycling, or anywhere to put them. I work from home.

I work from home too. I collect dead machines and take over to scrap yard on my way to Connect. Licence cost £150 for three years licence. Good investment.

Hi Twicknix: Thanks for that, I was told the Licence was a lot more than that. Will have to look into it again.

Just to point out that if you carry any customer waste on your van, you should have the waste carriers liscence, and if you put any WEE waste at your premises you need a hazardous Waste Site registration. This is the law unlike electrical testing! Because more people have died from waste WEE than electrics!?

Scrap machine is kept on the van and yes I do hold waste carrier licence. I do not store it at my address just in the van. Most scrap yards require two appliances to meet the minimum scrap value to make it worthwhile as it’s all cheque based transaction. Mine is minimum of £10 but others could be £20. Few months ago you can easily drop it off and be paid in cash.
I go through a lot of scrap machines usually Hoover, Hotpoint with welded tub bearings failure. Before scrapping, check the sump and filter for money!
