Hi guys, miele have released a new cheaper washing machine within the past few weeks it seems.

Here is a product comparison between the new model and the models that costs £729: https://www.miele.co.uk/e/compare/11456200,11456170,11456180

The only difference is the new model is designed to go under a kitchen counter and the control panel is angled upwards.

This price is much closer to ebac and they both have an angled display. i wonder whether they are trying to stop ebac from taking some market share in the higher build quality market segment from them.

I wonder whether the internals are the same as the £729 models or whether they have reduced the quality.

They have also released a cheaper 8kg model WSD023 WCS which is also a built-under model with an angled display which costs just £749, their other 8kg models start at £869. The 8kg model has quite a number of differences from the other 8kg models.

Interesting. Lowering build quality is a one way ticket to losing your reputation for reliability. Be interesting to hear how they have lowered the asking price.

Miele are probably coming around to the fact that the number of people that will pay, not only for the machine but also their exorbitant service and parts are diminishing. It was always a very small niche at the top of the domestic market.

    So, two choices.

Stay as you are and try to win the argument on quality which, I can assure you is not easy when you can buy a machine for a fifth of the cost or a good brand at half the cost or less.

Or, find a way to lower the entry price and get some volume.

Although a decade old, this article is still relevant and explains why there’s no getting around that lowering the quality is the only way to reduce prices:

There is a third option. Educate customers as to why they shouldn’t be buying garbage machines but honestly, good luck with that as the vast bulk either don’t want to know or don’t want to listen.

But essentially, the only way they can get the price chopped like that is to compromise in some way and I think we can all have a pretty good guess as to how. If you are expecting a Miele built well that will last 20 years, that is probably not it.

It has a completely sealed tub which is not available as a spare part so no need to have back up stock at a cost. It doesn’t instill any confidence in the product as a retailer when I see this. Spare parts and diagrams for it are here if you want to look.

I hope Miele know what they’re doing. Dropping the quality of build on appliances is the most likely way if damaging the business beyond the short term. That’s if the new cheaper line of appliances have compromised the build too far. I have been a happy Miele appliance buyer for maybe 40 years.

Update: miele have now stopped selling the other two 7kg models.
