New AEGs (Polish) are lighter, shallower than old (Italian)

Went hunting for replacement washer-dryer today, and had been interested in new AEG L7WBG741R (£570 with reduction) as previous AEGs had been given a good rating by Which?
However I noticed a few differences between this Polish-built model and the older John Lewis branded Italian model which comes from AEG/Zanussi/Electrolux stable.
Most significantly, the new AEGs seem much lighter in weight. So much so that I went to the AEG site, to find that they don’t actually list the weight of their models.
A Bosch model (Chinese) was adjacent, and the weight of that model was similar to the John Lewis version.
This new AEG is significantly shallower as well.

All of this slightly unnerves me, as the bottom line is that I might be buying a new design of AEG which is less ‘solid’ than previous high-rated models, and built in a new factory by a new workforce.

Anyone know why AEG appear to have reduced the weight of their machines? There are few independent reviews around as the models are new.

Lighter one piece sealed polycarbonate drums. Thinner grade metal cabinets with ribbed reinforced sides. Plastic moulded control panels (formerly metal). Alloys replaced by plastic. Smaller concrete counterbalance weights. Lighter induction drive motors. Condenser units smaller and thinner. Fan motor units smaller, lighter.

Weight saving a massive priority in modern mass produced factories targeting a world market.

OK, thanks – I’ll just assume that a lot of things have got ‘lighter’ at AEG since their last range from Italy.

I beg to differ on the origin of the model you quote above. It is made in Italy (Porcia factory).

Hi, just fell on this – no axe to grind whether Italian or Polish, but my AEG L7WBG741R has a label saying ‘Central Contact Point: Poland’ (admittedly rather than ‘Made in Poland’)

It is not one of the Okokombi heat pump type washer/dryers which I read were definitely made in Porica, so interested to know how to work out where exactly made.

If definitely in Italy, then older workers must be in tears comparing the quality of what they are now producing with what they used to produce!
