ModeratorHi Lads,
Just kickin an idea around here and I know it does not apply to everyone but for those of us that do commercial work when things never seem to work out in our favour we are alway’s being quoted from work providers and insurance company’s the age old phrase of ” SWING’S AND ROUND ABOUTS”
Yet if thing’s dont work in their favour they simply change the rules, i.e. reduced rates for B.E.R. calls. Plus the fact that we are also expected to guarantee parts that we make no mark up on.
Might it be an idea to outlaw these practices in our trade by raising a campain within UKW whereby we give full notice, say three months that we will no longer accept these terms by 1 st April 05.
I wonder how many would be prepaired to back it ? Is it worth discussing in open forums ?
Your thought’s please as thing’s are quiet on the site at the moment and UKW usually tend’s to lead from the front.

Sean,
Pose the question in TWR I would say. As it doesn’t affect me and Chris, it’s best suited to ask a wider audience without ‘going public!’ 😉

morning,
I can understand the thought behind what you suggest.BUT, whilst I do not receive a mark up on Connect work I am invoicing 320 plus calls a month to them and at £37.50 minimum + vat, its serious work. They do pay again for part failure in guarantee and for recalls that are not down to me. Rejection rates are so minimal its not worth arguing about with a ber of £30.00 and Credits for damage ect are easy to get.
I think it would be unwise of me to join such a campaign when so many of our fellow repairers are hungray for work. Plus Jason and Phil at either side of me would swallow the work without a seconds thought for me.Connect are the only contract I do not receive a mark up on and I think a better idea(from my business position) would be to champion the £40.00 per call target, for all contracts.

This is why I posted the Idea in here first. To go with a crusade would require unanimity amongst us all, as we would all be guilty by association if it were to gain momentum.
But where you have the situation where the call rate is halfed as with GBDAR who also impose a 90 day call back on any other fault on the same appliance to be done as a call back. I feel it is these type of arsehole company’s who hold the trade back, as they are allways sited when you ask for improved rates from others.

We’ve left alone the reduced rate BER for a long time and it is something I personally abhor but I don’t know that now’s the time to attack it, or much of anything else in all honesty. We’re into the busiest season of the year now for all of us and we are all going to be pressed for time in the next couple of months. Plus people’s minds are elsewhere with Crimbo etc. on the way, so I wouldn’t launch anything now unless it was a real issue.
That said, you’ll have noticed that most new stuff getting banded about is coming with a £40 or thereabouts rate anyway and most are giving up on the reduced BER as well. So in time I think we’ll see a move away from that anyway as it’s bollocks and we all know it.
Kev, I take your point re the amount of work but to some extent I don’t accept it. Were you to get an extra £2.50 a call either through spares mark up or increased labour you’d be £800 a month better off although you will be aware of that as well as I am. However, reduced rate BER calls do affect you through DAG. 😉

Specific action against specific WP’s is the way to go with this, as the surrounding factors of the whole contract can effect this really IMO.
For instance, I can handle the D&G BER rate as we make a mark up on all the parts fitting, whereas we don’t on the AIS contract.
GBdar and JTM would be my idea of a starting point as they are a bunch of crooks, I don’t work for either for those reasons.
