ModeratorI have just fitted a 2.5kw element to this cooker http://www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/modules.p … pic&t=7908
I was unable to see the rating of the original element, due to discolouration/corrosion. Would a 2.5 kw element used to replace a 2.0kw
element be likely to cause the inner glass door of an oven to shatter on first use?September 17, 2005 at 6:45 pm #147555Penguin45

It would reach temperature faster and the stat cycling pattern would alter, but I can’t see it exploding the glass………

Exactly what I thought, cannot see her accepting that though, looks like my powers of seduction/obfuscation, are going to be put the test. 😥
if all else fails I will give her Daves address. 🙂

Did you check the thermostat was operating when set temperature was reached ❓ as occasionally on these cheapo ovens a faulty element can result in a shorted thermostat and no temperature control.

Good point, will need to investigate, she has just told me that the oven has been out of action for over six months before today.

Just to put your mind at rest 🙂
The original element is a 2.3KW 2 turn, the 2.5KW 3 turn replacement is the standard used by Bernstien themselves as an “improvement” to raise the cooking performance.
It’s either pure coincidence (oven not used for months !) or the thermostat has failed and overheating.
Inner door glass part number 020299009903R which should be available from Caremark on 0870 7502435.
Hope this helps me luvver 😀

LOGICALLY, OVEN GLASSES OFTEN TAKE A KNOCK, A DISH OR SOMETHING DROPPING ON THEM, AT SOME POINT.
AS YOUR AWARE THEY CAN SHATTER FOLLOWING THE INCIDENT OR ANY TIME AFTER. THIS IS OBVIOUSLY THE FIRST TIME ITS BEEN HOT FOR SOMETIME.
BEAR IN MIND ITS THE FIRST TIME ITS REACHED HIGH TEMP, FOR A PERIOD OF TIME. THAT STRESS IN THE GLASS, JUST WAITING TO EXPAND… COULD EVEN HAVE BEEN WHEN SHE WAS SLAMMING THE DOOR SHUT WHEN IT HADNT COOKED THE TEA, BANG 😡DONT TAKE IT, IF YOU CANT CONVINCE HER LEAVE AND SLAM HER DOOR HARD, SEE IF YOU BUST THE GLASS IN THAT. 😈

Just to put this to bed.
Went back this morning to fit new inner door glass. Ran on all temps, stat working fine. I have to say that the way this inner door is held in place by two small metal plates, top & bottom is asking for trouble as it will put undue pressure on two very small points along the longest edges of the glass.
Still, she paid up. 🙂 -
