Hello all, not been here for a while, but I wonder if anyone can give me a bit of advice please?

I am very close to buying a new fridge/freezer (a frost-free one preferably) but I would like one that does not have a hydrocarbon refrigerant gas. I understand the most used gas is R600a (Isobutane) but there may be some around using R134a, which is a bit less efficient, but far safer (IMHO).

Does anyone have any advice here? By the way, the new FF is for one person, so a huge thing is just not necessary. Thank you.

From a few years back, if memory serves me around 2015/16, all domestic units must use gas that is not CFC based so you’re stuck with isobutane now by law and, that’ll be that. It’s illegal to sell CFC containing ones for domestic use.

Thanks for that. HFC’s are now banned too? (HFC 134a is still used in all car air con systems as far as I know).

If possible I want to avoid having a bomb in the kitchen.

    Yes.

For domestic refrigeration units… kills polar bears and makes holes in the atmosphere apparently.

Some applications it’s still okay, till they get a suitable replacement.

Well, you’re not going to get anything other than a isobutane unit using R600a, no.

Progress eh? I have to have a bomb in my house to save the Polar bears.

Thanks for the info. The manufacturer of my chosen FF has confirmed by email that they are no longer able to manufacture R134a FF’s for domestic use. Only R600a.

FWIW, I decided to go for a Liebherr CN3033. If I am going to have a bomb in the kitchen, I figure I might as well get a well made one! Thanks all.
