I just fitted a replacement pump for our washing machine (Bosch WFF1800GB/01 (bought 1996 and still going strong, only this pump and some new motor brushes needed to resurrect it)

The problem is that the seal on the inspection chamber on the front of the pump is “weeping”, no matter how tight I screw it up. I’ve taken it off twice now and checked for dirt, wiped the rim etc.

There seemed to be a lot of possible replacements, I bought the Hanning BS51114 from here, it is a perfect fit:

Why is this happening, it’s new! – should I put some silicone sealant or rubber grease around it?
    Thanks, Ed

Sadly the O ring is vulnerable to over tightening and getting scratched with fine grit particles. Likewise the plastic sealing surface of both the filter cover and chamber get minute scratches which cause the seal to leak. The ‘pattern’ Hanning pump rather suffers more than other replacement Bosch pumps and you cannot buy the O ring separately either.

Sourcing O rings from DIY stores or motor parts dealers can usually solve the problem. 😉

OK I solved it, nothing wrong with the O-ring (well square-ring seal in this case) and no dirt.
The screw-in cover was poorly finished by the manufacturer, they had left some “flash” on the plastic moulding face which the seal buts up against. You could see the imprint of it in the seal surface. I carefully scraped it off with a scalpel and now it seals perfectly.
I wonder if the machine will last another 17 years?! cheers!
