ParticipantHi Andy, thanks for your reply, firstly my sincere condolences on your other half’s health.
I don’t know what more I can say…….Re Bosch washing machines, I won’t be buying one with a sealed drum. But you’re right I haven’t looked into parts prices for them. And although I would be repairing the machine myself once it’s out of warrantee (I’m a car mechanic, so hopefully within what I can do!), the cost of spare parts is still a valid point.
As for grease on the seals, I can’t see any manufacturer not doing that otherwise it wouldn’t last 5 washes, let alone hundreds. If you believe otherwise please show your evidence. As for Bosch vs Zanussi, interesting point, but you don’t mention reliability comparisons, the Bosch WAN units are ~50{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} more expensive than the Zanussi unit you mention, but if the Bosch units were 50-100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} more reliable then it would be worth it. Not forgetting the hassle of a breakdown.
I have no idea how reliability actually compares between them though, do you? Or anyone else?
Just wondering what made you decide the Zanussi would be the better bet.September 27, 2020 at 11:40 am #472134electrofix
ModeratorThere is no way of comparing as you would have to have lots of them in identical houses with identical wash loads
All i can say is the bosch models using the split tub used to be called the WAE range. I have quite a few Wae units in heavy use situations over 8 years old and the bearings are still ok. some machines are on their 3 set of brushes which in a domestic setting last between 5 and 7 years. If the bearings do go, provided they are changed as soon as they get noisy, then its not a bad job and not overly expensive and you can do it yourself

ParticipantIIRC the WAN machines use brushless motors (their so called Ecosilence drive), so no brush issues their :).
Good to hear your WAE machines have done well :), both my father and sister have said they’ve had Bosch machines last many years, although I have no idea which models (except my father’s machine was ~15yrs old when they replaced it a few years ago, so an older generation).
Re comparing machines, are their no known general trends with them?

Moderatorits like saying ford cars go wrong more often but then there are more ford cars on the road so its expected
you have to know the product density for a given area to know that info. yes we know the really bad stuff but a lot of the good makes have gone down in quality mainly driven by demand for cheaper product. Its mad they cant get it inot their heads that cheap means unreliable rubbish

ParticipantYea ok, so no way of knowing then?
As for bearing prices, looking at the parts catalogue for the WAN208108 and WAN28201GB although I see the bearing I don’t see the bearing listed, is it part of the drum 0318? Btw, the former is £147, the latter £106. You said earlier the drum is the same part number, but they aren’t (although the motor is). I wonder what the differences between the drums are?? (aside from £41 :p).
Are the bearings industry regular parts? And if so can we just buy them from bearing shops? If we can, is their anything stopping us removing it and fitting a new one?

Moderatoras long as the seal is available then the bearing can be got from any local bearing supplier, they are nothing special 6205, 6204 is a common set used on hotpoint early models. Bosch will be similar
the only other thing you would need is a seal kit which contains the tub half seal and a load of bolts because you have to snap the plastic clips to get the drum apart
item 315 12010820 £4.06

ParticipantAnd just to add to the confusion Bosch has added a new machine, the WAN28281 for £549, and the other 2 have been de-listed from the product list comparisons. Maybe gone out of production?
Anyway, I guess I’m going to have to write down the differences to work out which one I want, the pages for each machine are slightly different which makes comparisons difficult:mad:October 8, 2020 at 8:02 pm #472140don

I tried that, it doesn’t show all the details, and anyway, as I said, it now it only lists the 28281 and not the other 2 :(.
You sell washing machines?Dave
£100 cheaper!? Nice 🙂October 9, 2020 at 7:52 pm #472144don
ModeratorBosch like a lot of other manufacturers have trimmed down the number of different machines they produce in order to increase production on the more popular lines. What you now see is the current range.
Yes I do sell machines, have done for many decades 😉
