    Hi from a noob

I’ve just had the above built-in dishwasher fitted and switched it on for the first time. The pump comes on, but no water can be heard coming in to the machine. After a while, the pump stops and the error message F4 appears. Any ideas what the problem might be?

Any help you can offer would be very much appreciated.

    Tap on/ hose not kinked?

    yes and no

Just notice there is a small amount of water in the bottom of the machine.

Also, the start light flashes 4 times, tying in, I suppose, with the F4 error code.

F4 is no drain in the time allowed. As this is a new install, I would suggest that you inspect the spigot where the drain hose couples on under the sink. This is often blocked to prevent leakage. It may need a plug removing, or the end lopping off.

It seems that the drainage pipe is fitted too high up under the sink, so the pump is unable to empty the machine’s final cycle. I know it sounds strange, but would shortening the pipe help? I have a pneumatic switch for the waste disposal unit which only worked after shortening the air hose – previously, the air pressure was not enough to trigger the switch. Would this be a similar situation? Or does the spiggot need to be lower?

Sounds a bit unlikely, DH. The magnetic drain pump should lift to about 5 feet before struggling. If the sink spigot is clear and you’re only getting a trickle of water coming through, the drain hose more or less has to be kinked or trapped somewhere behind or under the machine.

    I love kitchen fitters. Not.

by ‘magnetic drain pump’ – do you mean the fattening of the pipe end with the ‘lightning bolt’ electricity symbol? Because if so, that is connected to the mains water supply. I’ve had the machine right out with the same results and there is definitely no kinking in the pipes.

Is it possible the pipes have been wrongly connected? I looked at the installation manual myself ande verything seems ok according to that…

That ‘fattening’ of the pipe is a part called an Aquastop, used to cut off the water supply in case of internal leaks, or other faults. A quick and simple test if you have the machine out is to put the outlet hose into a large bucket or over the sink and see if it empties correctly. If it does your problem is with the undersink plumbing, that is to say, the blockage lies in whatever you have the grey plastic outlet pipe connected to under the sink.

    Cheers Jim

It empties ok into a bucket under the sink – I haven’t yet tried it at a higher level, ie into the sink.

Under the sink, it connects to an inlet tube at the side of the waste disposal unit. I’ll check that soon.

    Thanks everyone for your help.

probably not related to the specific fault. i thought i’d point out that the lightening bolt symbol is to tell you that the valve should be mounted in a vertical position. sometimes (rare) fixing it to a horizontal fitting can stop the machine from filling.

It turns out that the plumber did not unblock the entry point to the waste disposal, where the drain pipe was attached, so it wouldn’t empty. I’ve attached it to another spiggot, and for now everything’s cool.

Happy New Year, and thanks again.

Glad you sorted it eventually. 8)
