ParticipantI’m trying to place an ad in one of my local papers. I already have a classified advert in one paper serving one region so I’m trying for another region under classified. I was quoted £25+vat for a 3 x 1 classified (which I’m sure I have going off in the other paper) so I sent almost the same advert in and the girl I’m dealing with has got back to me via email saying there is no chance it can go in a 3 x 1 and that she has tried all the tricks in the book. Therefore it would have to be a 6 x 2 advert. The price has shot up to £130+vat. A big difference I think, but I’m not sure what they mean by 3 x 1 or 2 x 6??????
Do they mean inches or cm’s or is it just a term for a typical layout?
Anyone know please?
Thanks..

When I first started up I was given a piece of advice by an advertising agency friend. It seems to work. Forget the boxes and such just put a three liner in the articles for sale part of the paper but you have to do it every week. Cheaper and it gets the work.

I agree ,I have the same three liner in the kitchen appliances section in the local paper.
It Stays in there constantly just ticking over ,customers know it’s there and refer to it when they need to .

If there’s a weekly paper it will be better to advertise there than having one or two ads a week in a daily paper. I tried advertising in a free paper at one stage but it was a waste of money. There’s hardly any local news in the free one so a lot of folk bin it without opening it. Also it’s only delivered in the towns and bigger villages so you don’t reach rural customers.

Hi Richard,
I advertise every week in three local papers owned by the same group and by doing so I get a discount. The sizes are cm x per col width and depending on the paper they have differing col widths again in cm.You can check this yourself with a ruler if one papers col width is one cm more it can make a difference to the amount you can get in.
As you are a business ask the paper if you can speak to one of the advertising reps they will have all the info regarding any discounts for regular repeat ads.
Also find out if anyone produces a local business directory I have found these very good for my business hope this helps.
