Had a 2 year old Hotpoint with faulty main module last week. I advised the customer that it would be cheaper to get Hotpoint to do the repair (if I have to buy Smart Card gear I will be charging £100+ to do a module change).
A couple of days later they rang back to ask me to carry on and get the module. It seems they have fallen out with Merloni about payment methods. They like to pay the engineer in cash when the job is completed. Merloni insist on payment of £99 by credit card when the job is booked. Like a lot of people up here in darkest Banffshire, this customer does not have a credit card and does not want one. No alternative was offered, just no card, no repair 😯

Are you going to risk a module change on it now…? 😯

I was thinking about this only yesterday.

Can they legally refuse to complete a repair under their 5 year parts warranty period if the customer does not have access to a credit card.

There are lots of older people round here that don’t have them. ❓

Dont blame them though, customer abuse and atitiude is reaching the point where I am thinking of doing the same, for new customers at least. At least then they might be arsed to stay in for us.

I`m glad to see its not only me that gets the abuse and out calls. Its funny how they always just had to “pop out” and they always seem to get back “just after you`ve gone” 👿

I get a couple of these on a weekly basis too, truly makes me want to strangle someone when it happens.. & i’m not a violent person 😉
So i can kinda undertand Indesits reasons, & hey, if it makes them look bad then GOOD! Their attitude matches their products..both complete sh*te!!
I wrote off a 2yr old Hotpoint last week with panel failure & i didnt mention the 5 year option & dont intent to in the future, i feel slightly guilty about it ‘cos i hate waste, but why the hell should we mention it.
I do however spend several mins telling the customer why she should never buy another Indesit group product (& a few others) as long as she lives.. i enjoy doing that you see.. 😆

The reason I suggested they get Hotpoint to do the repair was that I have to give a guarantee on the work I do, normally 3 months. I don’t trust these modules to last 3 months so I avoid doing them where possible. This one is a welded tub machine so perhaps the bearings will fail before the replacement module 😆

Margaret Douglas at Hotpoint’s Customer Service Centre informed me (by email) that it is quite acceptable to pay the engineer either with cash or cheque when he calls. 😉

Perhaps it depends on where you live. If their nearest engineer is 50 miles away they might not want to risk the trip.

Hi Phidom, would you care to translate your Latin signature for us. I too used to have a Latin Motto- Non illigitimus carborundum. Meaning, Dont let the bastards grind you down.

I’ll do it for you ’cause I was intrigued too and ages ago looked it up.
