    Hi there,

I’ve spent the last 2 hours trawling the net for information on thermostat replacement on a Hotpoint WD420 washer/dryer and found nothing.

I’m a little desperate as I’ve got twin baby boys with the plops (nice!) and being without a dryer is a disaster 🙁

There’s loads of info and part websites for tumble dryer thermostats (including loads on ebay) but can’t find anything for this model (about 1 year old).

I’ve unplugged and had the top off. Here’s what I’ve found:

One easily removed black stat that has two black wires attached via a plastic block connector. This is secured by 2 screws to the outside of the heater unit.

One very difficult to remove yellow spot stat about 3 inches away from the first. It’s difficult to remove as it’s secured inside the heater housing.

Can anyone help find me the parts? and does anyone know why there is generally no info dedicated to washer dryers on the web?

    Many thanks,
    Rob.

Not so familliar with this model but the black stat is in fact a thermistor while the other one is a one shot stat that may have tripped because it got too hot. To change this one does involve a strip down of the heater box which is really a job for an engineer who will also be able to find out why it may have failed in the first place. Would have thought that appliance will be under a 5 year parts warranty still.

If your machine date code ( the first two numbers of the serial number) is below 40 then there is a complete modification to cure this persistant problem. It involves a new heater box, element and some other alterations. You will be covered for parts under Hotpoint’s five year parts g/tee. Not something to attempt yourself really. Part number is a 1605230.

Thanks for the very sound advice.

I’ve just called Hotpoint and they deny there’s any know fault with the WD420 (my machine does have the older 39xxxxxxx serial code).

You’re right in saying that parts are free for 5 years, with a fixed labour and call out cost of £89. We’re desperate for it to be sorted so we’ve agreed. They guy arrives on Monday.

Time will tell if the thermistor/thermostat replacement (likely easy fix) cures the problem for good!

At least Hotpoint guarantee work on the repaired part so if the thermistor/thermostat keep tripping then it’ll cost me nothing for them to keep replacing it.

    Cheers,
    Rob.

    Iadom,

As you said….the Hotpoint engineer turned up and replaced the whole heater box with a “slightly updated design”, saying that it was normal practice. Very quick, and very efficient.

Guess Hotpoint did have a problem with the WD420 but don’t really like to admit it.

Oh well, I’m happy. Thanks for the spot on advice.

    Rob.
