Noisy WD

My 18 month old Hotpoint WD860G has today started making an unusual rumbling/whirring noise internally.

It’s unusual because when I start a spin (for example) it starts of very slowly turning the drum, and the noise is there, then as it spins up and gets faster it’s hard to tell if the noise is still there or not (because of the high speed spin noise). When it slows again, the noise is there again. However (and this is where it’s odd), the slow spin stops, there is a click (I think, it’s hard to tell) and then the noise stops and the washer starts turning slowly again in silence (doing the back and forward turns to unstick the clothes).

This makes me think it’s not the spin making the noise, but something else.

It kind of sounds like the noise it makes when expelling water, but not identical I don’t think.

Also noticed just now that when drying, there is a background whirring noise all the time which didn’s used to be there.

Any ideas?

I will be calling it in to Hotpoint tomorrow (under extended warranty) but would be nice to know when it might be and whether it will pack in one day as a result.

sounds like something in the pump ie. coin, bra wire etc.
if you check it make sure the plug is out.

the pump works when the dryer is on so if it is a foreign object you will hear it on drying as well as spinning

Would it be constant when drying though? Throughout the entire process?

More importantly, if I get a warranty engineer out and it turns out to be this, are they likely to cover it or charge me?

And finally, will it pack in?

A worn drain pump will make a noise not unlike a quiet drill on hammer action – sort of “Brrrrrring” away. Or possibly a foreign object rotating with the pump. Due to the design of the magnetic pump, they will all die one day, as the thing is designed to wear out. The pump is running during the drying cycle, to clear the condenser cold water trickle feed and the resulting condensate.

No obvious noise today, but I have a few loads of washing and drying to do over the weekend so will see if it returns.

I have however booked the engineer to come out to check it over any way.
