I posted a request for advice about this model recently but didn’t get any replies so I thought I’d give it another try…

My lovely stainless steel fridge-freezer is playing up. To be fair, I’ve had it since 1999 so I can’t complain but I’d like to try to repair it rather than trash it.

The freezer compartment temperature is rising as indicated by the red alarm indicator. This red light is constant (the manual advises me to “consult your retailer without delay”).

I’ve tried adjusting the thermostat for a colder temperature but this results in frozen vegetables in the fridge compartment.

I’ve pulled the machine away from the wall to give the motor better ventilation. The motor/condenser is very hot (could that be normal?).

Thanks in advance for your diagnosis!

    Cheers,

    Joe

    Hi Joe,

That’s a bit of a blast from the past. 😉

It’s more than likely a compressor failure, that’s bad.

I saw the odd stat/module failure in those machines but it was almost always an overfreezing issue you’d get when that popped. I’d very much doubt that was the issue.

Given the age of the fridge freezer it’s hard to recommend spending too much on it so, replacing the compressor I’d advice against as it’s not cost effective.

    Hi kwatt,

I was pretty sure it wouldn’t be economical to repair but thanks for confirming that. You’ve saved me hassle and cash!

I think I’m a bit too attached to it as it dates from before I got married!

    Cheers,

    Joe
