KeymasterHi, I’ve inherited an old AV838C (just when were they being produced?) and the manual is slightly different to the actual physical model. (by the way, what weird Italian marketing decided to make the manual so sexist?!).
the problem – about time I found the filter and removed crap/lint etc – hairs and dust are now appearing on my clothes.
Notably, I can’t find a filter where it shows (square metal flap on the front-right-middle) and only a round screwed-in plug nehind the front kickboard which seems to reveal a black angular plug diverting water to/from what looks like the pump.
So, advice please, it’s a pain in the backside to pull out and I’m going to have to – but is the filter really on the back ?!! I’m loath to chuck it out if it’s still got some years left in it.
And yes, I have filled in the form on the Hotpoint (/Indesit/Ariston) Support website for a newer manual – no joy.
Cheers and good luck with the website/forums..
Iain.

Hi TGD,
Sounds like you’ve found it….. there should be a trap pulls out with the cap, and that’s it. Do you actually have a problem with the machine, or are you the first poster on the site ever to indulge in a bit of preventative maintenance? 😀Regards,

Hi, i’m afraid I’m 99{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} sure what I’ve found is the front access point to a pump assembly behind the kickboard. it actually looks near as damn it (same shape and colouring) as the 110665 pump assembly being offered on this site.
(http://shop.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/Washing+ … +Pump.html)So i’m no further on in finding the filter, and am beginning to wonder if this model of Ariston had a rather carefree attitude to stuff that is normally filtered out.
By the way, the manual is a generic one for the AV834C/**AV838C**/AV1048C – the pictures and references to the filter certainly dont match the 838C!
Thanks anyway.
Iain.

Hi doc
The term filter can only be applied loosely to some makes…more like a trap to catch solid objects like coins and buttons in many cases…if it were a gauze type filter then ‘about time i cleaned it’ would happen every month or so!
If you have stuff getting on your clothes then you might try running a descaler or three through it (there are chemicals specifically made for washing machines)…beware though you may need to clean the ‘filter’ after each dose…you’d be amazed at how much scum/limescale can build up in an older machine 😉March 9, 2005 at 8:56 am #128130Phidom

I have found with Ariston / Indesit machines you get get 2 similar machines, even down to the same model number, that are constructed totally differently. It would not therefore surprise me if one AV838C had a filter and the next one off the production line didn’t. A chap who worked on the Morris Marina production line told me they once made a car with 2 doors on one side and one on the other, nobody noticed until the car was complete 😯

thanks for the replies.
being in Scotland we dont usually find many descaler products on supermarket (or ironmonger etc.) shelves, but I will look.
unfortunately I still dont know where my filter (or indeed, trap) is, as it’s certainly not on the front. I’m going to have to take my kitchen cupboards and drawer-front off in order to slide the machine forward and investigate the rear. Don’t ask – how I inherited the kitchen.
Thanks,
Iain.

aha. thanks for that. so in this case filter = trap = a void at the lowest part of the loop before the pump itself – not even an elegant trough assembly to pull out.
so, presumably this type of washer dryer doesn’t ever trap fluff/lint/hairs like a modern condensor model does ? these get washed away in the next wash cycle ?
thanks to all for your help. i would appear to have been a bit optimistic/enthusiastic/naive in my assumptions ..
if only Ariston’s machines mached their user manuals 🙂
cheers,
Iain.

ParticipantIn theory, the trickle feed from the condenser should wash the fluff down to th epump in a low concentration, so the pump should get rid of it.
