ParticipantDear all,
I have a Blomberg machine (1501 AAA, approx 7 years old) with a Selni motor. Although the motor still operates, the mounting brackets sheared off a few days ago. The end of the motor carrying the broken brackets detaches easily and ideally I’d like to replace that part.
If anyone has an old Selni motor lying around and could supply the brackets i would be very happy to hear from you. The motor is stamped with:
Selni U2.55.02 V.09
best wishes,
Jamie.July 28, 2008 at 11:22 pm #258318cockney steve

Hi, as you don’t seem to have any replies,i’ll suggest a different approach.
Have you considered that it’s possible to get the broken lugs welded back!
a small local welding/fabrication shop or maybe engineering works should be able to oblige.
steel, cast-iron and aluminium will all weld.July 28, 2008 at 11:39 pm #258319kwatt

It’ll be aluminium Steve and thin as well, usually not suitable for welding I’m afraid.
Even if you did I doubt it’d hold due to the stresses involved as the motor gets rattled about a fair bit having to deal with a whole truck of torque one way, then t’other.
Let me put it this way, it’s been tried and I’ve never seen it being a success.
Of course, in a sensible world, you’d be able to buy the motor endplates or a motor at a sensible price, but it’s not a sensible world and we’re talking Brandt/Fagor/De Dietrich prices… think the best part of £200 for a motor at least, if it’s even available. 🙁

I hear what you’re saying, but the owner has spare time, which the repairer doesn’t . TIG welding with a bit of extra reinforcing, may work.
I’m in full agreement with what you say,-Lucas alternators were fully-repairable in the “old” days (just as well! )-end brackets were frequently broken for the same reasons you gave above, Nowadays, an exchange unit is so cheap, it’s not cost-effective to strip/rebuild…….but a @£200 motor has plenty of latitude to replace an end-bracket!
OK- What about a secondhand motor? Locally, we have a recycler who sells any machine for about £50…one screw or whole machine, same price.
As this is not a the world’s most popular range of machines, I think you’ll struggle….scrapyards are presently turning stuff round in hours ,as opposed to weeks, due to the high price of scrap.
An uphill task, quite honestly. 🙁

Dear Steve and Kwatt,
thanks very much for taking the time to reply and explore solutions. Apologies for the slow response on my part – I’ve been in Snowdonia and out of the reach of internet access all week.
I’ll try to get in touch with a local recycler but have got the message that this is a long shot. I’d thought about welding the bracket or even drilling/tapping a supporting bracket alongside the original but I wonder if the motor detachment is a symptom of something else (bad shock absorbers?) so perhaps it is simply time to quit.
I thought it was a shame to quit at the first sign of trouble when old Selni motors are two a penny on every street corner, but clearly this is not the case.
Anyway, sincere thanks for replying. This really is a great site.JimC.
PS for the record, Dave Conway also replied to me incredibly quickly and can get hold of a replacement motor at a very reasonable price. I’m going to look again at the machine and decide whethre its worth pursuing.
