Somehow I forgot to do my paper tax return by the October 31 deadline so I have to do an online return, which I’ve never attempted before. I normally do the Short Tax Return, SA200. It looks like I can’t use the standard online form because I inherited some cash from my late fathers estate during the 09/10 tax year. Does anyone here know which online forms I need to fill in? I asked this question as an email to the helpline of the website but it looks like the helpline is only for problems getting the software to work rather than queries about which software forms to fill in.

There should be a section on the form that includes additional income including capital gains tax.

Best to call the tax office direct, as can be complicated, they are very helpfull.

You could appoint your accountant to be your agent. They do on-line returns for the bulk of their clients, so it shouldn’t cost you a lot.

I do all my own for Staff PAYE and VAT but I leave my personal to the accountant.

Thanks for the replies. I rang the IR helpline and apparently the normal form can be used unless you get a regular income from the deceased persons estate. I’ve now submitted my return but was not impressed with the software. I lost track of the number of “404 error” messages I got and it is often counter intuitive in terms of the format required. I didn’t know if you are supposed to round up / down to whole pounds like you do on the paper form.
