    Hi All,

Does opening and closing the dishwasher door damage the dishwasher? My wife said an engineer told her that because the cables run from inside the machine and through the hinge to the control panel on the front of the door that opening and closing too many times will cause the machine to break because this stretches the wires?

It happens to a number of dishwashers, normally after several years I’m afraid and, there’s really not much that you can do about it.

To be fair, it’s far less of a problem now than it was 10-20 years ago when it really was an issue for many.

Ok thanks.. its not happened yet, but I was opening and closing the door to put things in when she said this comment… she said she try’s to open it once or twice a day. leaves everything on the side then at night loads it and empties in the morning… I actually thought it was a load of rubbish. our machine is 5 years old.

    Not rubbish I’m afraid.

However, whilst it isn’t a particularly common issue these days it’s certainly not unheard of.

Under normal use as you describe it shouldn’t be too much of an issue however the normal advice that we offer stands because of things like this, don’t put it on and leave it unattended in an empty home or go to bed with it on. The reason is that if it does break the wiring it can pop the circuit breaker if you have RCDs or, in extreme and very rare occasions it can smoke or ignite the wiring. I stress, this is extremely rare but it has been known to happen.
