Oven fault

    Hi,
I have recently bought a house and the double oven in it is a Tecnik TKC8525. There seems to be a fault with the grill as it will turn on from cold but then goes off and comes back on again as if it was controlled by a thermostat. This makes it virtually useless.
Any ideas what could be the problem?

Cooling fan or cooling fan control stat would be the first things to look at I expect.

    Hi,

Thanks for the reply. Would the fact that the grill is switching off not suggest that the stat is working? Also, is it usual for a grill to have a stat control? I’ve never come across a grill that did this before.

    Re: Oven fault

If the cooling fan is faulty the top will overheat, the safety stat will trip, the whole thing will die.

If the cooling fan control stat is faulty, it may well cut out on the safe stat and, the whole thing will die.

In either event, once it cools off, it’ll all come back up and work as normal.

Also the grill is controlled by another thermostat or regulator and that too can also give similar symptoms.

Meanwhile, the user gets completely confused about what’s going on.

Trick is, to work out which one is giving you the trouble.

Given the grill element is mounted at the top of the cabinet, often right under the control stats, it’s a fair bet that using that will cause it to cut out long before it may do in normal use as an oven. Especially as a fan oven.

I’ve been doing this for a few years now, trust me, you’ve a 90{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} or higher probability that it’ll be one of the above if the grill cuts out for long periods then magically starts to work again. 😉

If however you mean it just cuts in and out every few minutes then, that’s probably normal operation, all electric grills do that, they cycle on a stat or regulator to maintain a mean temperature. Some will stay full on but, that’s very much not the norm in domestic built in ovens or cookers, virtually all will operate on a cycle.

    Hi, thanks for the reply.
I’ve done a bit of research to see what’s involved in replacing the stat and, as it involves pulling the oven out and dismantling it, I can’t do that as I’m not physically able.
My wife wants a new kitchen next year so I don’t want to spend money getting it repaired or replaced until then but I had a thought about making it work ‘normally’ until then. If I snip the wire connecting the sensor will it allow the grill to function without cutting out? I realise that it is also an oven but I never use it as that.

    Re: Oven fault

No, it’ll kill it if you do that I think.

But I strongly recommend not attempting to bypass a safety device as, that could end very badly indeed since you’d create a very high risk of fire without the safeties in place.
