Our washing machine has stopped the end spin during a normal wash cycle, yet we can successfully manually set it to spin.

The other day I noticed the washing machine sitting doing nothing and the display reading 005 (5 minutes?) and I sat waiting for it to do something and for a good 10 minutes it just sat doing nothing.

I tried to open the door and it was locked. Being of not sound mind (I am severely disabled and late at night heavily medicated) I switched off the machine and opened the door. There was seemingly no water present. However when first opening the door there was a distinct “hissing” noise, like a airlock seal being broken slowly.

I quickly closed the door again to prevent the machine from blowing up and causing Armageddon 😉 and waited a few moments, then tried the door again and nothing happened, I didn’t lose any limbs, so I opened it fully. The washing was dripping wet, like when I used to handwash clothes (I’m not talking pre-electricity – I’m only 39 😛 – I am talking when only one item needed washing by next day.. but now I’m waffling..)

I then selected the manual spin and it worked perfectly.

Since then the washing machine will NOT do the spin within a wash cycle (we ALWAYS use the quick wash on the option dial) if you guys want me to test using another program option then you’ll have to bear with us on that as we have already emptied our wash basket, and bar putting the kids in there, (our teenage Son could probably do with it though, he stinks..) we have nothing else to wash. (the other half is VERY “anal” about how much electric we use in this house, so he point blank refuses to put the washing machine on just for the sake of testing it : )

We have read the article on “machine not spinning” and read about the safety cut out on an unbalanced machine… we have checked the filter – there’s nothing in it as we did it recently.. also – if it was that, then surely the spin option would not work when we don’t touch the layout of the washing inside or edit it in any way, just literally shut the door and select spin. Thinking of it, if it was a drain issue, we wouldn’t be able to open the door anyway?

So, any ideas on what we can try next pretty please?

(if you would rather I didn’t TRY to be humourous (I’m very trying) on future postings, please do say so 🙂 )

Any fault code come up at the end of the cycle?

From your description it sounds as its trying to drain but is blocked, the hissing noise you describe was likely the air/suction caused by the drain pump. (Even if water is below drum level some may remain in sump)
On some of these there is a non return valve which consists of a ball in the sump hose, if it sticks in up position it can cause the problem you describe, other Panasonic machines have a motorised valve which lets water down to drain pump. They would normally not advance on to spin until it has registered that water is all gone.
Hope this is of some help.

    (Humour welcome)
