This machine was not draining. I thought there must be a blockage so I removed the pump, hoses etc but everything was clear from the sump hose onwards. I then noticed a plunger type device which appears to be operated by some kind of stepper motor / crankshaft arrangement. I turned the device by hand and the plunger came out, releasing the water into the sump hose. What does this thing do and is it important for it to work? If it goes again I will be tempted to disconnect the mechanical linkage and leave the plunger valve open.

yeah, i know what your talking about, its a dump valve device, i’ve done what you said on a machine as the little plastic drive arm was broken, never heard of a problem since

Thanks Seamy. Did you have to use something to keep the valve open? There seems to be a spring that keeps it closed but 3 clothes pegs will serve to hold the plunger out.
