Participantjust to let off steam- why is it when a town decides to build new blocks of luxury flats, well thats what they call ’em, they never allow enough parking for tradesmen or visitors. We are now over-run with new builds where you cant park unless you live there. ask the customer for there permit and they say ” need it for my car! ” have to leave my van on yellows and hope not to get ticket,or pay & display up the road. just wonder’ed if anybody has the same trouble- london excluded.

If I get a call to an area that is likely to be a problem I ask the customer first if there’s parking.
If not I say sorry, if I can’t park I can’t do the job! It’s strange but up to ow they’ve managed to sort something out 🙂

No longer will the dreaded traffic warden threaten, just park anywhere near a yellow line and the CCTV camera will get ya!

It’s extremely bad in Nottingham. Massive building spree of private apartments in the city centre. They’ve just forgot to put in adequate parking.
I wouldn’t say that town is a ‘no go’ area any more, but I only go if:
a. I’m not too busy
b. They have pre arranged parking
c. they’re willing to pay extra because of the amount of time it takes to get in and out of town.
There are some places like Victoria centre flats that no one goes to. These are very time consuming to get in and out of, and most of the tenants are unwilling to pay a call out fee in the first place. 🙁April 2, 2008 at 7:19 am #247550bagman

Amazingly I came out of a house last week to find a parking attendant in the process of writing a ticket for my van say ‘oh, you’re working mate? No problem, we all have to earn a living’.
He then got on his moped and rode away leaving me ticketless and gobsmacked! 😯April 2, 2008 at 7:38 am #247551smeghead

doubt i’d get away with it, there too tight round my way. they begrudge
paying callout let alone a surcharge ontop!!April 2, 2008 at 9:23 am #247552kwatt
KeymasterRe: parking nightmare
It’s a growing problem, we have it not only in Glasgow now but many outlying larger towns as well.
It is also a increasing problem in the Burbs as parking is restricted to “residents only” parking areas.
I have to say that, often, we do ask if the customer has parking available and if they do not or they suggest an NCP 1/4 mile away or more we politely ask that they make arrangements to provide access. If there is no access to the property then, there’s no access and that’ll be that as with 10 jobs a day we just don’t have time to circle round in the hope we catch a metered parking space within striking distance. Asides from which the inner city developments are notoriously difficult to get to due to traffic anyway.
I know Bryan goes into London at 4am, but he’s off his rocker and if I suggested that I’d get hung or a request for shift allowances, rightly so I feel. But, the rates we are paid do not allow me to compensate the engineers to provide that level of service and what with the pressure on with diesel prices et all already there’s little chance that we can afford to bend on it.
I’d love to be able to say yes, we’ll do it no problem but these days it is a problem with the private parking Nazis on their little mopeds zipping about and the time as well as financial constraints that we already have to deal with.
One NCP charge for parking = a good chunk of the profit from the job.
One parking ticket = the profit from half a dozen jobs.
Customer provides free parking, no problem.
That’s the reality.

The other problem I come across in this regard is accepting a call and then finding parking is restricted badly at best, impossible at worst! 🙁
A good knowledge of the area prior to accepting a call has it’s advantages but is by no means infallible. And even taking on a call out in the sticks is no guarantee over parking problems. A few days back I went to a call where Powergen had dug a trench across the lane leading to a farmhouse I was intending to call. They provided a metal plate across the gap for me provided I was driving a 4 by 4 to travel 50 yds thru a wood before getting back onto the track. I phoned my customer to say I couldn’d get to her, she didn’t know Powergen had blocked the lane and was livid with them.:(
I called back 2 days later, all good fun! 😀

Quite often they’ve already had a few point blank refusals by then that they snatch my hand off.April 3, 2008 at 8:02 pm #247555silverbroom

Must admit no problem in parking whatsoever most of my work is in country locations, Glen Isla, Glen Clova, Glen Esk plus small country towns.
As I drive around my calls I think I must have one of the most scenic routes in the UK with just a few yards walk to the customers front door.
