ParticipantCan someone enlighten me on how a PAT tester works?
I have a local school that has asked me to check out a BEKO dishwasher that has failed a PAT test on “leakage current”.
The appliance is perfectly ok with any test that I can perform with a 500v Meggar.I have heard of this before but never been able to resolve the problem.
Does a PAT tester test earth leakage current at 50Hz?

The basic ones dont test earth leakage but the more advanced do. Even then it is awkward as they run the machine for a few seconds in order to test it which is fine for a kettle but makes waiting for interlocks to engage and pressing start buttons almost impossible. AFAIK earth leakage does not need to be tested as far as PAT testing is concened only insulation and earth bond. Loads of ‘our’ appliances will fail earth leakage tests if that was the case.

Thanks guys. I have tested the macihine for over 30 minutes and through a heat pause.
The company that done the PAT test are going to retest so it should be interesting.

Apparently this was the only appliance in the whole school that failed, so I would imagine that they are using the equipment correctly.
I think some PAT testers test a leakage current on AC rather than just reading insulation resistance at 500V DC as we do on our tests.
I haven’t heard the outcome yet but I will follow it up shortly.
