Yes so far as I know it’s because the Yanks don’t use chip & pin they can get away with using the dongle things. For the EU that’s not an option now.

There are supposed to be some that are usable in the EU but we’re all still waiting as I want to use it too.

There is a trial starting in the UK beginning of Sept which we are part of.

We haven’t received the kit yet but I will report back on it once we do as I am not yet sure if it will be Chip & Pin or just a card reader like the US version.

I noticed that few months ago and it looks promising. Everyone are on eBay and they are likely to have PayPal.

Yes, you can register interest in this and also the first one I saw, here:

    https://squareup.com

The trouble is that they are confined to the USA as there they don’t use chip & pin, they US is still in the dark ages in that respect some may say and rely on a signature which more often than not isn’t checked.

But I guess training Doris in Alabama to use a pin number could be a challenge. 😉

The PayPal thing is of interest but, the caveat there is that PayPal’s charges are staggeringly high and the customer is afforded a huge amount of protection. This is a huge danger to repairers as, if the customer has a problem within 45 days they simply tell PayPal who hold the payment until the matter is resolved. From much experience of this I can tell you that in the vast majority of cases, PayPal will side with the customer, even when the customer is in the wrong.

And, if you don’t use chip & pin here you are open to chargebacks much, much more than you would be using it.

    Re: PAYPAL CARD READER

I guess with PayPal with their 45 days protection thingy is no different with people using Mastercard or Visa as they can dispute it up to 6 years. More often with Visa or Mastercard, it is very difficult to get your money back as a customer as they want more evidence rather than a mere verbal disgruntling complaint.

I would it find it very worrying if PayPal is on the customer’s side regardless of the circumstances. Surely they must have some kind of diplomat that looks at both cases without any prejiuce?

It says 20 days, but I’m sure that you have 45 to raise a dispute.

We get it on spares, typical example…

Mrs Jones buys a PCB and pays using PayPal.

Gets it, fits it, finds out it wasn’t the PCB after all.

    Tries to return it.

Return gets refused as the goods are used.

    PayPal dispute raised.

PayPal awards the customer their money back.

Even although the customer is clearly wrong and, it happens on a semi-frequent basis. What would worry me is that you get a repair the customer doesn’t like or feels is not complete, whatever and they just raise the dispute before even contacting you (that happens a lot) and you lose.

You also must be able to prove delivery so, if you use PayPal to take a payment you MUST ensure you get a signature or you’re stuffed at the first hurdle and the customer will be awarded their money back, you’ll get nothing.

There is nobody that looks into it other that the PayPal dispute team and, they’re obviously busy people so I don’t think that they look at things all that carefully.

PayPal are extremely pro-customer as a business in my experience.

And, bear in mind, there are an awful lot of savvy punters out there these days that know how to play these systems.

It seems to me both the seller and the buyer are ‘customers’ of paypal. And its the seller who pays all the fees, so there must be a good reason to even accept a paypal payment.

    Just my take on it.

It says it ideal if you take up to £25,000 in card payments a year. What happens if you take more?

Over 25,000 it would turn out cheaper to get a contract one for lower charges but a monthly rent.
mPowa also do one that slots onto phone and no limit.
