I found this conversation by searching for a “salty dishwasher problem” and it seems appropriate.

Our machine has suddenly started leaving a thick salty film all over everything.

I know it’s a really old machine (Philco DW1906) and it may have finally just died. But before burying it I thought I’d ask for help – particularly since this excellent forum managed to get me some new basket wheels a couple of weeks ago. So this is clearly the place to ask!!

There doesn’t appear to be any adjustment level on the salt/softner level. All we’ve ever done over the years is top up the salt dispenser once a week (we live in a very hard water area). We have ended up using a 3-in-1 tablet but only because the rinse aid dispenser stopped working a few months ago (it just leaks all the time). But we haven’t had any problems since then. The only changes we have made is to hang an orange scent thing that we were given off the top basket – (though I’ve now taken that out since it smells horrible); and we changed the salt supplier – but it is one we’ve used before without problems.

    Anyone got any ideas?

To be honest, it’s probably the three in one tablets. Try it using just a powder and see what happens.

Maybe, but we’ve been using them for months without a problem.
Could they suddenly start having an effect after all that time?

We’d quite willingly go back to the powder if we could fix the rinse aid dispenser. I don’t suppose you can get the right one can you? You managed the basket wheels. On the other hand if it’s expensive then it might not be worth it if the salty film is an indication of some other terminal illness!

I wonder if anyone else has any thoughts?

And I’ve noticed that it leaves this salty film after running just a “rinses” without any powder/tablet or whatever.

But if I just do the “soak” then everything is clean – but cold!

    Ollie,

Dave is the whizz kid on these old contraptions 🙂 , but with his permission 😉 , I would suspect the Salt/Regeneration system is the culprit. Either a faulty valve or the Ion Exchanger has thrown in the towel.

Its old and needs putting out to pasture in all honesty 🙁

Oh no! 😯 That wasn’t the other thought I wanted to hear! 🙄

Any other nice thoughts anyone? 😕

How bad’s a faulty valve? (Is there an emoticon for “clutching at straws”?)

Changing the valve may not sort it. As Martin said, this one is getting on a bit and probably the Xeolite chrystals in the resin container has become leeched.

Things can be made worse either by being hot inlet fed or excess lime scale over a period of time.

Might sound obvious but have you checked salt cap lid for cracks or perished seal ❓ , These can cause salt to leak in throughout cycle leaving a salty coating on the crockery ❗

“Peter” said the machine is actually a SMEG on the “Wheels” thread. Philco, now being part of Merloni will almost certainly have rendered the parts obsolete, so maybe some sort of comparison with older Smeg models will yield fruit if parts are required. Problem may be that dealing with Smeg direct is likely to be expensive………. You’ve got to REALLY want to keep this appliance running!

Well this forum clearly has powers beyond its ken!

Since being threatened with the “last rights” by Martin and Alex my poor old machine has started working properly again. (Can’t find the emoticon for “touch wood” or “fingers crossed”).

Thank you all for all your help.

    Re: Philco DW1906

Just in case I’ve started looking to see what might be a good replacement machine.

Reading through the “What would you recommend?” topic elsewhere in the forums it would seem that the recommendation is to keep hold of anything pre-1998!

So in answer to Penguin45’s question “Do you really want to keep this machine?” perhaps I should since it is now 12 years old!

Should I keep fixing it or replace it?
    Can’t afford a Miele!
Or do I just come back to this forum for psychic healing when required?
