    Hi All

Sadly the vacuum just stopped working the other day.

Took apart and checked incoming AC voltage is present and switch works ok via continuity test

Checked continuity on fuse and cable again all appeared well.

Beyond this im out of my depth , im worried the motor has died as i did hear a poof sound but hoping that was a short.

I know a few of the components on the circuit board such as the bridge rectifier but unsure how to test.

    Attached is a image

could motor brushes cause this fault ?

any help would be greatly appreciated as i dont want to add this thing to landfill.

    thanks

there is a fuse on that board
    has it gone ?

One end of it does look blackened 😉

fuse tests ok for continuity guys , unless im measuring wrong ?

beep setting checks out fine when testing across both ends 🙁

no burning smell , last thing left is to pull the motor , although no extra lives are coming through either so only 1 live and 1 neutral at a time if that makes sense.

the 2 black wires in the foreground of the pic. put your meter on buzz and see if it buzzes when you connect a lead to each one

    Hey Dave

Just checked no beep when checking across both leads for continuity. Am I checking by correct positive and negative leads across both to complete circuit right ?

FYI this problem happened once before and once I plugged and unplugged plus reeled out cable hoover came back to life and was working fine , I would say wire strain or loose connection but it’s checking out fine for those faults 🙁

from what i can see the 2 black leads go to the motor, you should get a buzz across them and since you dont its a motor fault

Yeah what an absolute shame , I knew the poof noise wasn’t a good sign !

yes those wires do go to the motor although I can only measure via the traces on circuit board as they connect to solder points.

one of the cables measures 200+ AC , the other nothing I assume its neutral , although I can’t be sure

is there a more definite test I can do to 1000{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} say it’s motor ? I maybe thought brushes if I was lucky.

also the hoover was only used for 1 year any ideas why this happened?

I store it above a extractor wondering whether the heat damaged it but it’s just next to the pipe in the cupboard which doesn’t get hot so doubt it.

    Thanks again as always Dave

what you have to do now is pull the motor and look at it

yes it may be sticking brushes but the state of the comutator will tell you that

    Cheers Dave

Phillips in thier wisdom have made one of the holes deep and narrow so need an extra long but thin torx magnetic screwdriver for one bloody screw ! Otherwise I would have whipped it out by now , tested the board for continuity between various points and all seems good so it’s either stuck brush or I’m done as new motor priced more than what it worth , sadly landfill looks likely.

    Hi Dave

Managed to rig a screwdriver together and pulled motor see the images

Cant seem to get it fully apart and i dont want to break it but no continuity when i go across both connection tabs on motor at all

Also when i spin motor and try measure resistance i get nothing too no reading (could be on wrong setting for multimeter)

At this point unless i get to the brushes its beyond my talents , i cant see much black stuff and neither does it smell of burning so im still hopefull 😉

im gonna take it to a machine shop to see if they can get it apart and check brushes or check a winding (hoping as iv done the labour it may be fairly cheap) as i loved this hoover and new one is rubbish.

Anyway thanks for your help as always

well sorry to say but its dead

chinese motor, fan crimped on so cant be removed

time to bin unless you can source a new one

domel still seem to make a similar motor

Oh dear , just so annoyed as it was working and i strained cable then it died again and wont come back now i guess perhaps it had nothing to do with it but it was intermittent till (did it once before) till i heard to poof , oh well ill see if i can source similar im actually in Hong kong so perhaps the Chinese can fix the Chinese motor 🙂 who knows, Again massive thank you to everyone who helped to diagnose this issue. Ill take it to a few shops and see what they say out of curiosity and keep you guys posted.

Just to update anyone with the same issue , As confirmed the motor has died and suction was weak , i only notice this now as i have a 1400w version of the hoover and it runs the motorised brush with no fuss where as this one started to give up the ghost clearly it wasn’t anything i did and the motor was temperamental and on its last legs , will do a full autopsy with the help of a machine shop but think sadly its beyond economical repair.
