ParticipantI know we have touched on the subject more than once and must confess I can’t be a££ed to search right now. But the question is, what is the best medium (glue) to use in order to seal holes in these outer tubs?
Yesterday I had a welded tub Zanussi (ZWF12070W1 in fact) with a tiny pin-hole chip in the heater sump vacinity caused by nothing less severe than a ladies hairgrip getting caught in the inner drum and clouting the protruding edge.
The only option at my disposal was to lay the machine on its side, clean and dry (with a hairdryer) the tiny fracture then seal it with the 2 part Araldite Epoxy resin glue. Advise the customer of the patch-up repair, suggest they leave it 24 hrs to set, then try it and see if that stops the leak (if it does’nt to throw it in the skip and buy a Bush from Argos (only kidding on that one).
Is there a sure fire method of sealing these tiny holes in plastic outer tubs? Being as I’m not into the chemistry of what glue to use on what material, especially when it comes to w/m plastic tub compounds. Would (for example) PVC-U pipe glue be a better option in a case like this?

Hi Martin
We use a gas powers soldering iron to melt the plastic together first the seal with either debor or similar as its flexible but this is only for small holes other than that is a new tub.

Hi used epoxy putty a few times and done the job without any probs even on larger holes. Due to the fact its a putty and not a glue when you spread it into place pushing the putty well into the hole it goes where you want it and stays there. Very quick drying time, 10 mins to very firm couple of hours to be ready to use. spreads to a nice flat surface using a wet finger ! I know its branded as metal weld and emergency pipe repairer blah blah but I just get the generic stuff from poundstretchers ! £ 4.99 for two tubes and its excellent.

epoxy putty called Dr Dings is recomended by hotpoint, dont have the part no as the site is down at the moment, but it does work for holes up to 10mm max.

I use B&Q’s own brand, it looks just like that stuff at a fraction of the price.

I’m not by any means putting down the merits of Dr Ding but from experience I can say the far cheaper alternative from Pound Stretchers ( I know a lot of their products are sub standard and unlike Ronseal don’t do what it says on the tin ) however having used this a few times at 4.99 for 2 packs it quite simply does the job.

Weller soldering gun with plastic cutting bit fitted.
Chop off a surplus looking bit of plastic and melt and mould into shape. No setting time.

Sorry Martin, not sure, I rip the outer packaging off so that it will fit in my little ‘Glues & Sealants’ box.
Its a small dark grey tube, the packaging is dark black & red.
If you don’t find it I will have a look the next time I am in there.
Jim.

i use soldering iron and run in a bit of surplus plastic. then rough-up the area around and then apply “chemical metal” from the car shop. blast it with hair dryer for quick set and its ok.
joking aside, ive looked inside a Bush lately and from what i saw id certainly have one over an indesit or hotpoint or even any of the other s@(#e with a welded tub.
