ParticipantWent out to a brand new Daewoo washer the other day for letting agent.
Customer complaining of burning smell. Found no fault but was surprised to see that the parts of the motor that are normally ally were plastic. Only the field coil and armature were metal. The carbons were just slotted into the plastic casing and held in by a sprung metal pin/clip.
Looked very cheap and nasty.Subs

Why not? There are plastics now with tensile properties far in excess of aluminium alloys, as well as thermal properties. If the manufacturers can now do this for less cost than using metals, it’s exactly what they’re going to do.
Never forget, that in the mass market, this is an entirely cost driven industry.

It would be interesting to see how well the plastic lasts as it’s being heated and cooled each time a wash is done. Don’t suppose they’re worried about that though because the electronic failure will send it to landfill long before the plastic cracks up.

Very easy for them to mold the brush assembly’s into the casing as well i would imagine, another opportunity for them to make a wearing part impossible to replace, like the bearings in sealed drums.
Or am i being too cynical.. cant imagine why :rolls: :rolls:July 19, 2009 at 11:37 am #292222lee8

Same for the Telephone, Automatic Washing Machines,Televisions, Kettles, the Car and Passenger Planes.
Wasn`t the light bulb slammed in favour of gas lamps.
I guess progress is inevitable and history long forgotten.
