Hi – I really need help with trying to sort out this problem. The situation is as follows:

The other day my oven stopped heating up. Fan working all power to oven fine just no heat. Having read some posts on the internet it quickly came to my attention that it could be the element at fault. (one thing to note here is that although the oven wasn’t heating up it was not tripping the power although it did initially).

I purchased a replacement part and went ahead to fit. Unfitted old element replaced it with new element. The problem now is that when turning power back on and switching on oven, the new element starts to heat up (slightly glow) and then the oven trips the power within about ten seconds with a very slight burning smell.

I dare not do anything else but before I have to call in professional I just wanted some advise. I don’t think I have wired it up incorrectly. Sorry for the long explanation of detail but I thought the more info the more help with someone trying to diagnose problem. Just seems weird that old element although not heating up was not tripping power yet new one is??? Please any thoughts most welcome.

Hi just to add to this – I have put the old elelement back on and although no heat it does NOT trip the power like the new one. Does anyone think it is a problem with the new part??? Help most welcome and needed as wife is getting annoyed at not having an oven for over a week!!!!!

First off, where did you get the part and, what is it?

The element you should have is this one or the pukka one which is the same thing, different part number.

The reason that it’s tripping is, most likely, either an earth fault with the new element or it’s been stored incorrectly and is damp.

In the case of the former, that happens a lot with the really cheap elements you get on Fleabay etc. and is why we don’t sell them. 😉

It can happen with the best of them but, it’s incredibly rare.

In the case of the latter, you can and I will stress this, IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU’RE DOING, run the element with the earth tag off to dry it out. DO NOT do this if you’re even remotely unsure what you’re about.

I suspect though that the element is faulty from what you’ve said.

Hi thanks for replying – I got the new element from http://www.ransomspares.co.uk They had two elements that would have done the trick so I purchased the more expensive one which is this one http://www.ransomspares.co.uk/products/ … 134425.htm the cheaper one which is this one http://www.ransomspares.co.uk/products/ … 120663.htm I think is the Homark one that you have linked to. I thought I was doing the right thing by going for the more expensive ‘genuine part’!!!!

I have contacted RansomSpares and to be fair they immediatly said they would send out another part. I hope as you say it could just be a faulty part.

I really appreciate your help. Cheers

Sorry another thing I have just thought when reading your post back – there should only be two leads connecting the oven to the element shouldn’t there, is this right?? There are four connectors, two on one end of the element and two on the other. I have connected up to one on each end??? It was just when you said earth tag??? i’m no electrician so I won’t be trying anything that might frazzle me!!!!! Cheers
