ParticipantHi,
Wonder if some kind soul will be able to help me out.
My washing machine suddenly stops in the middle of a wash cycle and just freezes there, it may be at the point of a fast spin and sometimes doesnt spin at all.
I have opened it and checked the belt (ok).
The drums is nice and free to spin as well.
The motor seems to have developed a slight churn (bad bearing type noise) but still runs.
If the bushes were bad would it weaken the output of the motor?
Could it be the out of balance thing kicking in? (would it have it on this machine as its old)
Any ideas guys?

Out of balance protection has been on machines for well over 10 years now.
I wouldn’t think the ‘bushes’ are the cause of a problem, unless of course you have your machine in the garden and the ‘bushes’ are actually stuck in it. 😆
However, the motor brushes may be well worn and if so may cause problems. 🙂
The only way to find out is to remove the mains plug, take out the motor and check them.
Sadly the general publics idea of an old machine is part of the problem leading to more and more sub standard, poor quality appliances coming onto the market. 😥
A WMA58 is not an old machine. 😉 A three year old Indesit made Hotpoint could well be considered as old or at least past its use by date. 😥

Thanks for the reply, much appreciated.
lol sorry meant brushes – If worn would it weaken the motor i:e not spin on full etc? Would that be the first thing to check then?
How would I bypass or test the “out of balance protection”?
Does it have a motor driver board? Pressure switch?
Aha so the old(er) ones are pretty well made then, well this is the first time its gone bad so I suppose thats proof there.

You cannot bypass the OOB protection, it is controlled by the main PCB sensing the motor load/speed. It is almost unheard of to get faults in the OOB system on this machine.
Normally the motor will stop altogether if the brushes are worn, still worth checking them though. At the same time check all of the wiring connections to the motor and check the wiring harness near the large concrete weight at the front.
Also worth a look in the large black sump hose down behind the lower back panel for any obstructions in there.

Right, update:
Had a hunt around and actually found a diagnostics fault code procedure for these, I was thinking as well – Wish it had an OBD2 port lol
Got Tacho error – ON ON ON OFF – So handy…. I think the electronics are expecting the motor to spin and its not doing so on a wash cycle anyway(?)
On Spin its ok.
Also I can see strobe lights in the motor and its noisy(electrical activity noise) so I am hoping the bushes are gone.
I will get the motor out, bit of a mission trying to get at the front bolts..
I will post the full fault code procedure once I have sorted it so it helps others, or maybe even make it a sticky?

Have you edited the thread title, I’m sure you posted it up as a WMA58 yesterday.
If you do manage to remove the ‘front’ bolts please let me know how you did it. 😛
I have only worked on Hotpoint machines for 40 years and as yet I have not been able to get at the ‘front’ bolts on a WMA motor. 😀
I should add that if you keep on trying to run the machine and the brushes are worn then you are at serious risk of doing major, expensive damage to the PCB.
I wouldn’t bother posting the the fault procedure. There is no full fault procedure, it will only tell you the last error.
Also it is 95{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} certain that if you found it ont’internet it will have been lifted from the trade section of this site without permission so it will be deleted if re posted.

Yes I edited to the right model number DOH !
Bolts were dead easy, only 2 accessed from rear then pryed out with screwdriver on this model.
How do I tell if the brushes are worn? I suppose they are like brake pads hey and as they wear out they dont perform, there was some bad ticking come from that area, hope its not the bearings on the motor.
The extraction of the last logged fault code procedure was taken from another forum courtesy of ROCKS from Saint Lucia.
Shall I post it as it may help others doing a search? I dont have access to the trade section the info seems to be freely available on the net. Thanks

Participantno, dont post it
you do realise that wherever or however you got it, its copyrighted manufacturer information
if you post it it will be deleted, the rules on this site are there for a reason
if your motors been ‘ticking’ you need to check the armature for lifted segments, a new motor may well be needed
good luck

Ok wont post if you say so but he did type it all out himself as per his interpretation, only wanting to help others.
The brushes are shot I reckon lol
I will grab some of the bay and post back so that it may aid others, after all thats the beauty of the net, grab and run is not good.
Thanks for the replys and thanks for pointing out the armatures.
Fingers crossed it will be the brushes hopefully….

Those are the back ones, how did you get on with the ‘front’ bolts. 😀
Does sound like your motor is on the way out TBH. 😥

Thanks – Ordered the Bushes for a a few quid (just in case it was something else didnt want OEM replacements)
Only 2 bolts holding the motor and 2 guide shafts – Didnt need any other bolts for the motor to be removed, just the two near the rotor shaft and then pryed it out with a flat large screwdriver and out it popped?
Your right – Motor could well be on its way out, if the brushes dont do it then will open it all up, I have opened up alternators and starter etc in the past and luckily managed to fix them and destroy a few as well lol

Forgive me, my attempts at sarcasm re the non existent, ‘front’ bolts seem to be going awry, 😉
If the motor is in any way suspect then putting cheapo brushes in it is not the way to go, you are running a grave risk of blowing the PCB.
A new motor for this would be a sound investment if the drum bearings are in good order.

The brushes are from a reputable supplier and over 160 pairs sold so the quality will be ok.
Yes ok, I finally get it Mr I have been in the job 40yrs and know every kitchen appliance inside out lol – I am a mere mortal here hehe
Yes if I need a motor I will get one, I can the bits via Hotpoint on Trade anyway so a nice discount can be had, but will try recon/repair motor – Hell its more fun that way.
Thanks again…

Last post deleted.
As I suspected ROCKS from St Lucia did not ‘type it all out himself as per his interpretation’ as you stated.
That is a word for word copy even down to all of the dots of a post I made in the trade section of this forum on the 4th April 2005.
It was taken without any permission from this sites admin or myself.
It was worded that way by me so as not to be a direct copy of the manufacturers copyright manuals.
Even the bit at the bottom about lining it up to fit the page are my exact words. :rolls: 😈
The whole of that text is in fact my property. 😉
