Here’s one for you to think on….
Do manufacturers have the legal right to withold technical information that would otherwise prevent a “suitably qualified person” from repairing one of their products sold on the open market?????????????
One can purchase a motor vehicle and be allowed full access to technical manuals and up-dated publications from the manufacturers. Similarly, purchase a computer system and one can get full manufacturers technical back-up.
Those amongst us lucky enough to afford a Sunseeker Power Boat will also realise the enjoyment of full technical back-up Sunseeker afford their customers.
Try buying a new Gas Boiler?….All the info is readily available to anyone that wants it (wiring diagrams, test sequences etc etc).
So….
POLL
“Would you like more technical information on the product you have just purchased?“Is the ‘User Instructions’ informative enough?”
“Do you think a wiring diagrams and error code definitions should be more freely available for ‘suitably qualified persons’ to take advantage of in order to remedy faults…?”
“Do you regard ‘Manufacturers and their agents only’ service too restricting?”
“Do you hate calling these ‘Service-Help lines’ where you are put on hold and when eventually you do get through, no-one can help other than suggest they ‘send and engineer out’?”
Considering the abject disregard manufacturers in this business have for us at the ‘pond life’ end of the trade. I dream of having the bottle to take these bar stewards to court over their ‘restrictive practices’ hampering our every move. Hate Italians especially, love Chinese food but soon they will be flogging us washing machines over here as well, big time…That will be the end, even for pond life, when that day comes mark my words 🙁July 18, 2005 at 4:10 pm #141572admin

Rock on guys, nice response
We really need to ‘bang our heads together’ on this and many issues during Septembers meeting (..is there an agenda set-up we can work to by the way?)

KeymasterSome of those questions have already been asked Martin, if in a roundabout way.

The call centre one is a good one though. 😉

The call center might be a good one although i suspect we all really know what the answers might be like, we’ve all had dealings with them with one company or another….and i’ve yet to experience a pleasant or quick experience with one. We seem to have such busy lives these days and are used to the speed of modern technology etc, so it’s really infuriating when one has to press numerous buttons for different options and being forced to listen to advertising or piped music.
A more interesting poll for me would be the one Martin suggests about whether the general public finds ‘manufacturers and their agents servicing only’ too restrictive.

We’ve covered it sort of with an earlier poll about manufacturers not releasing technical info but I guess we can put a different slant on it 😉
Suggestions for the main question please ….. 😀
Dave.

What about.
Is it fair for manufacturers/work providers who use agents, to be undermining these service partners by handling & making a profit from chargeable work & spares sales.
(If anyone can precis that lot, feel free)
Reason of course was highlighted in the rumour mill only a couple of days ago concerning an American company.
Manufacturers as well as work providers are now making inroads to their repair agents network and attempting to “handle” chargeable calls. As well as those who use service agents but are selling spares direct to the public.

KeymasterOr how about…
“Do you feel comfortable that a premier manufacturer will allow you to purchase spares online, directly, that could prove potentially fatal?”
😉

I think we’d best let that one ride until the national meeting between the manufacturer concerned and it’s network has decided on which way to go with it 😉

Dave.Good idea, the meeting regards this topic is scheduled for Thursday 11th August, between the manufacurter and agents concerned. This is to be at Sibson, so I will update as appropriate, or indeed if appropriate, depending on the outcome.
I will also let you all know what changes have taken place at Sibson since the proposed refurb. Don’t hold your breath.
