Problem with after market door seal

Hi, fitting an after market door seal to a Bosch WA28461GB/15 I discovered the two small lugs (in the groove that fits round the drum) that fit in two notches either side of the drain holes are not quite spaced far enough apart, so the seal will not sit properly there (see photo attached).

How is this normally dealt with or is the only solution to use the Bosch part? Or are some aftermarket seals more reliable?

looks like the seal you have assumes the holes on the left are cut out when yours are not

gen seal seems to be part no 686004 and is not a lot more expensive then non gen so to save hassle just fit gen one

Thank you Dave. ‘gen’? There are three drain holes in the rim corresponding to three in the seal (two are hidden behind my thumb and finger). The rim drain holes are hidden under the rim lip but you can just make out the bottom of them between the two leftmost red circles.

The two leftmost red circles show the notches that are cut out of the rim to receive the two rubber lugs in the seal groove that goes over the rim: these are circled on the right (though the top one is a bit harder to make out). The problem is the notches are at least a centimetre further apart than the lugs; so the lugs, or at least one of them, won’t fit down into its notch leaving a slight bump along the seal edge after fitting, and probably potential for a leak.

was wondering if bosch changed the seal in the range but early and late model have same part no but its still poss later seal will fit early models and they have modded in some way
have not had this problem myself so cant comment beyond that but if you order gen seal at least you know it should fit.

where did you get the seal from ?

I would contact them. if anyone knew about this problem I would say they would as customers would return parts saying they wont fit

Thanks Dave the seal was obtained through a local repair/parts outlet for £28.99. THE Bosch one is £48.99. I see yours is cheaper but the models it is for do not include ones beginning WAQ like mine.

Although you haven’t heard of this problem before it is possible to fit the seal, and only a careful examination shows a slight lump in the edge of the seal where it fits over the rim, but where the lug misses the rim notch. It may be that people just shrug their shoulders and ignore it, but I don’t want to take the risk, in case there is a leak.

Like Dave I’ve never had a problem fitting one of these pattern door boots. The 2 Dave placed a link to are the same, though there must have been an oversight in not including the WAQ range.

I’ve never noticed these cut outs and lug moulding on the tub and door boot respectively, and I don’t believe there is an issue here as long as the drain holes sit in the 6 o’clock position.

But I’m curious, the original door boot you took off, did the groove/moulding align on that?

Hi Martin yes, the spacing of the lugs on the original door seal is at least a centimetre further apart. I will get the manufacturer’s original replacement part tomorrow and check if this is also the case with that one, although I am sure it will be (or it won’t fit properly either).

I didn’t notice the lugs or cut outs either to start with. It was only when I tried to smooth down the door seal along the rim where one of the lugs was, and couldn’t do so fully, that I discovered the reason.

Measuring the distance between the cut outs, it corresponds to the spacing of the original seal’s lugs, not that of the aftermarket one. So it’s not a case of me missing the cut outs by failing to position the seal correctly either.

Incidentally, what are the lugs for? I suspect they are there to guide the seal into the correct hole aligning position? What if they were removed so nothing dropped into the cut outs…would it cause a leak?

Not if you’re careful to remove just enough to seat comfortably. I’ve never had the need TBH.

Yep. Lugs on manufacturer’s seal are at least 1 1/2 cm further apart – I have just taken delivery of the new part.

I can only assume that there are different after market manufacturers and you guys have never had to fit one with incorrect spacing. Otherwise you must have just left it with a slight bump in the seal where it fits over the rim on at least ond side of the the drain holes.
