Hi all – please could you spare a moment to help me; I found that my washing machine would not drain and so as per usual I cleaned the fluff filter (which definitely needed a clean). I reset the cycle and tried to start a new one (having found that the door opened fine) but found that no matter what I do I end up with the ‘Drain’ light coming on and then no activity for a matter of 30 seconds or so… then I hear a sound which I normally associate with the completion of a cycle. No matter what I do I can get the cycle to Start … it just goes straight to Drain.
Does anyone have any ideas of things that I can try to do to avoid calling up Domestic and General (with whom I have insurance) and going through a pedantic process with them involving taking an afternoon or morning off work?! I am reasonably technically competent.

Hmmm? To do so would involve intervention within and tampering with the appliance beyond your normal user access may easily void your insurance.

So no one here can indicate what this error might be? Presumably this drain light indicates there’s a problem with the machine. It would be helpful if someone would please indicate what the errors might be. If they are likely to be expensive / lengthy to repair then I would probably replace the machine rather than pursue D&G with their terrible repair turnarounds.
Any ideas would be much appreciated. Perhaps Martin is not the only person who is kind enough to provide a little input?

Any error detected by the microprocessor shows up in the display window as an E??. (For example a pump error = E20). In the absence of such error codes it could indicate a fault with the microprocessor (I.e The a main power board). So user intervention is NOT advised. Also any earth leakage with components, especially heating elements and main motor can cause spurious faults such as you are experiencing.
So all in all I think your best course of action is to contact the warranty providers, take half a day off and get it sorted. 💡

The last time I got D&G involved it took about 1 month to get it sorted. One of their engineers was under such time pressure he nearly had a breakdown and subsequently left the company having not placed an order for necessary equipment (a drain pump) which was necessary to repair my machine. 4 visits were required to get the problem solved which means 4 half days off work. To fix a washing machine.
So A) I wouldn’t really recommend a D&G warranty.
and B) I’d really appreciate it if some professional here could provide any kind of indication as to what the Drain indicator light error I’m experiencing might mean; Martin, thank you for your suggestion that it might be the main board. Do you think D&G or anyone would be able to diagnose further? If it is the main board and in the knowledge that the drain pump failed previously do you think the machine is on the way out and that perhaps I should just buy a new one with a good warranty?

Yes but only by physical intervention such as I referred to earlier.

It’s best years have long passed, your experience with D&G has been notable for all the wrong reasons (though your story not untypical by any means:( ) buying new would eliminate further sad tales and guarantee a quick resolve I would think.
Anticipating your next question : I favour Bosch/Siemens products though not their washer/dryer as it is made by Smeg (cr*p). Electrolux/AEG/Zanussi washer dryers are still about the only reasonable option. All extended warranties are covered by D&G, an expensive option I would avoid if I were you. 😉

So opt for a machine with a long manufacturer warranty (not provided by a third party).
