    Hi,

I wonder if anyone could help me – we bought a new flat about 6 months ago with a fitted Kitchen containing a Zanussi ZJD Jetsystem Turbo Dry 1200 Washer Dryer. I don’t know how old the machine is but the instruction booklet apears to be dated 1997 which is about when the flats were built. The machine still washes fine but the dryer cuts out before the drying programme has finished – normally only a few minutes into the programme but it varies and very occassionally it completes the programme.

My uneducated guess is that this might be something to do with the thermostat causing it to cut out but I’m far from an expert. I haven’t had anyone around to take a look at it yet as I would be really interested in hearing peoples views as to whether at this stage in the machines life (we guess it’s about 10 years old) it is worth fixing it or whether we would be better buying a new one now. Any thoughts?

Our initial feeling is to probably buy a new one as 10 years seems to have been a good innings for the machine and it could well now be on the decline. Our requiring a built in washer-dryer means that a decent model will cost upwards of £500 and all the internet retailers I’ve found off kelkoo etc. don’t offer installation for built in machines. They also only dispose of old machines which have been disconnected and having an occassional bad back I’m not sure I want to go through that performance and would rather have someone disconnect the old machine and install the new one so I’m certain it has been done properly.

    So a few questions:

    1. From the description of the above fault with the Zanussi machine is it possible to guess as what the fault is and how much it would cost to repair it?

    2. Is it worth repairing a 10 year old Zanussi machine or is this likely to be the first of many faults?

    3. How much would it cost to have some install a new built-in machine bought off the internet as I can’t find a dealer who will do this using price checker websites? Anyone offer this service in the EC1V post code area?

    4. If I buy a new machine thinking of an AEG-Electrolux Lavamat 14710VIT as AEG appear to have the best reputation other than Miele whose washer dryers I can’t afford given I don’t expect to remain in the current flat for much over 5 years. Any view on this machine or other recomendations – looking to spend around £500-600?

I don’t have room for a separate washing machine and tumble dryer.

Many thanks for any replies in advance – would be much appreciated.

    Cheers

    Chris

The condenser duct on the side of the machine is probably full of fluff and strangling the airflow. A stripdown and clean out would be required. Worth getting the motor brushes checked at the same time, if you opt for repair.

    AEG-Electrolux Lavamat 14710VIT is a posh Zanussi……….

Cheers Penguin – very helpful and really do appreciate the quick reply.

In your opinion would it be worth going with the repair job? If it’s likely to be a cleaning opertion to me that beats buying a new machine.

Is this doable myself or is it something I should get someone out to do?

Take it you are not a big fan of the AEG machine, anything which would seem a better prospect in the £500 – 600 price range?

it isnt a hard job by any means once you’ve done a few.. id go along with penguins fault diagnosis.. does the machine have a digital display (i.e does it have a countdown timer in the display)

zanussi machines are considerably well made , and are usually worth spending some money on

difficult to say whether its a job you can do yourself, depends how good you are with your hands really

Hi, and thanks for the reply.

    No digital display unfortunately.

My concern is if it is already 10 years old once I repair this something else might go wrong pretty soon down the line.

I’m good at following instructions but it’s not something I’ve ever done before so if I go down the repair I’ll prob get someone in to be safe.

    Cheers

Before you go buying an AEG or Zanussi, I think you should read about a problem myself and someone I found through this site had…
I purchased a Zanussi ZWD 1472 and susquently the fan broke within a matter of days(they recognised this fault so I had another) and then the next machine and subsquent 4(YES FOUR!!) were all faulty because the digital timer counts down 20 seconds for a minute on the DRYING CYCLE only….I then had a Zanussi ZWD1262 hoping that would be fine and that has got the same problem if you seach the forums you will see I have been speaking with another member who had an AEG (owned by Electrolux/Zanussi) and that did the same thing…My point being any AEG?ELECTROLUX/ZANUSSI with a digital timer seems to have this fault and by the way ZANUSSI(etc) Customers Services are very bad they have been an absolute nightmare with this as seem to think this is MY fault and have caused so much stress…NOW the person I spoke to on here has a BOSCH which he says ACTUALLY WORKS!!and that is what I am having delivered very shortly…JUST THOUGHT YOU SHOULD KNOW!!!

    please, try and be fair?

yes u had a problem, but warning people of your problems doesnt mean theres an epidemic out there!!!

i find zanussi machines pretty reliable, much better than any merloni machine around today

at least zanussi dealt with u and exchanged the appliance.. what more did u expect

merloni would have insisted on a repair and kept u messed around for a few weeks before even entertaining the idea of exchange

all im trying to say, is that sometimes you gotta take the positives from your experience, they sorted u out, admitted there was a problem, and sorted it

    aint all bad surely?

Re: Problem with Zanussi ZJD 125 Jetsystem Turbo Dry 1200

To be fair though helo it is a bit odd that there was five exchanges, I’ve rarely seen anything like that, especially from Lux group gear.

What does surprise me is that Electrolux would allow sales to continue if this were an epidemic fault, which makes me think it isn’t as it’d just cost them way too much.

You see the cost to exchange an appliance is horrific and that’s why it’s so hard to sometimes actually get a machine exchanged for a new one. Any manufacturer just doesn’t want to be doing that as it costs them money on the first one let alone if they have to do it again. They may as well have posted you back what you paid for the machine and added a couple of hundred quid for goodwill, it’s cost them that anyway.

Manufacturers, whether you like them or not, just wont’ stand for losses like that, end of story. It’s cheaper to withdraw the product, solve the problems at warehouse or factory and then start selling again than to constantly exchange products.

The problem that faygamo had is the the belt on the ventilator comes off due to the ventilator not aligned properly. they have sorted the problem now and the new machine dont have this problem.

Re: Problem with Zanussi ZJD 125 Jetsystem Turbo Dry 1200

IM SORRY BUT THEY ONLY CHANGED THE MACHINE BECAUSE I WAS ON TH E PHONE TO THEM SO MUCH ND THEY WERE awful to deal with. And anyway what do you mean what do I expect, I expect a BRAND NEW MACHINE TO WORK!!!And i dont expect the machine to have the same problem FROM BRAND NEW 5 times over.
Anyway being as I had these machines all relatively recently as did someone else here I cant see its been sorted as Zanussi never said that and repeatedly told me I couldnt return it because I had had 5 machines (I specifically remeber buying a new machine and didnt ask for a faulty one).MY POINT IS THEY WOULDNT ACKNOWLEDGE IT which is a shame because yes its a good washer dryer but not if the drying cycle wont stay on longer than 15 minutes wouldnt you agree???

Now I have to spend nearly £100 extra to get a machine that works, if it was sorted why did I have a machine only 2 weeks ago with the same problem????????

By the way I wasnt saying there was an epidemic just that the digital timer doesnt work on any Zanussi/AEG washer dryer….its odd it aint just me…..I would never believed it possible but we it happens again and again and Zanussi treat you like a liar (or even the retailer) then it stinks- They want a good reputation, then listen to their customers and fix a problem-as you say its cheaper!!!

OH YES—THEY DIDNT ADMIT A FAULT AT ANY STAGE–BECAUSE I THINK THEY TRULY BELIEVE THAT I WAS MAKING IT UP–WHY I OULD DO THAT I DONT KNOW—THY MADE THE SITUATION SO STRESSFUL WHEN IT DIDNT NEED TO BE…..

    Re: Agree with FayGamo

I am afraid I am in agreeance with FayGamo, one can only go off one’s personal experiences in life with particular items & research shows if you like a product you will recommend it and be loyal to the brand, but if you have a bad experience you will tell others to avoid like the plague!

Now Zanussi may well “build” a better machine than the Merl-tin-pot corporation lot but their UK service (Zanussi) leaves a lot to be desired especially given their playance on the fact that they are part of the Electrolux Group. When you think of the Lux Factor you automatically think quality/prestige & that one is in safe hands, given the heritage of the brand, the sad reality is they don’t give a crap, & try and turn the issue back on you blaming you the customer, i.e. “you must have done something to our machine to make it break down.

I know from my own bitter experience that I had to scrap 2 machines (one a condenser dryer & compact dishwasher) that were both 2.5yrs old because of appalling levels of breakdown and shoddy service & workmanship from Comet & Service Force. Not to mention the umpteen calls to Zanussi’s Head Office & Letters to the MD.

If you can afford a new machine, buy one, cut your losses & whilst I now own Whirlpool appliances (apart from me cooker) and am very happy with them, if you don’t like Whirly’s buy a good German Made make.
