I just replaced the thermostat in my 15 year-old Zanussi Fridge freezer model D62/26 because it was stuck off (compressor permanently off).

The original thermostat was a Ranco K59 L2539 which I replaced with a Ranco “equivalent” model K59 2805.

Now I seem to have the opposite problem. The compressor is running all the time and it’s very hot. The fridge compartment is at about 4C (it’s empty apart from a few beers)

Despite the thermostats being compatible, there are differences. The original capillary was much shorter and was insulated with a plastic covering. The last 10cm were not insulated but had a loose-fitting clear plastic sleeve, which was attached to a plastic holder behind the cooling element. To attach the new one which was very long (1.5m) and I just coiled it behind the cooling plate and fixed the end as before.

After seeing that the compressor was not cutting out, I read the instructions of the replacement thermostat in more detail, and it says that 150mm of the capillary must be in contact with the coldest point, with the end pointing down. I modified the plastic holder to press the capillary against the back of the plate (which is very frosty) and gently bent the end part down (the holder is horizontal).

In any case, it seems to be the same as before.

Does anyone have any ideas? The thermostat spec seems to imply that it cuts out at -25C. Does this plate get down to that temperature?

    Thanks for any info,
    Cheers,
    Simon.

    Re: Problems after replacing thermostat

    Sorry… false alarm.

I rechecked the thermostat wiring and I’d mixed up two of the terminals – don’t ask me how – it probably had something to do with that beer…

It’s now rewired correctly and the compressor is off – hopefully about to come on soon.

    Regards,
    Simon.
