ParticipantFolks,
Looking for some guidance on how long whitegoods should typically last – I realise that this is probably directly related to cost however the appliances we’ve bought (mainly on brand reputation) have not been particularly reliable (IMHO).
Bosch cooker has had new grill & oven elements (at 3 & 4 years)
dishwasher (also Bosch) control panel fell apart after 3 months (and then blew up last night (6 years)), washing machine (also Bosch) died (4 years) and was replaced with a Zanussi (which is on it’s second pump after 2.5 years)Dilema I’m faced with is do I spend £150 on a “cheap & cheerful” appliance (expecting to replace it every 2-3 years) or spend £350 on something hoping it will last 7-8 years and then possibly be faced with unexpected and biggish (£150) bills after 5 years?
On a positive note the MIELE vacuum we bought (probably our most abused appliance) has run perfectly for over 5 years (now that’s tempting fate :rolls: ).
Thanks
Fraser

Hi Fraser,
The cheap machines are a nightmare, highly frustrating and an ecological disaster zone. To go buy one with the mentality of “I’ll just chick it away after two years” isn’t exactly environmentally friendly, in fact it’s probably the most harmful thing you could possibly do.
£3-400 buys you into the bottom of the mid-range on a washing machine.
£500+ and you’re getting into the stuff that will last and, in all honesty, that’s where I’d suggest looking. 😉
On cookers, elements can be a bit of pot luck I’m afraid but in the main once you get beyond the cheapo stuff at the bottom there’s no huge differences until you again start to hit the really good stuff at the top end.
Hope that helps.

Hi Fraser
You paid a premium price for a good quality product from a high end supplier, hence how good it is. Work the same equation with the other products and while you will pay a higher price you will get longevity of life and guarantees too. Miele guarantees start at two years for the base machines and up to a whopping ten years for the top end units. Coupled with an after sales service which is one of the best around and you have a great package.

Guys,
MANY thanks, you kind off confirmed what I’d thought – although I hadn’t considered the green aspect. I guess what I don’t really understand is that the vacuum wasn’t that expensive compared to say Electrolux.
Anyway thanks again.

Hi,
thanks, had a look last night and the ISE sounds great – really like the recycling aspect – but it’s a dishwasher I’m looking for – probably didn’t make this clear enough in my original post.
Thanks again
Fraser
