Programming problems

I have an indesit washing machine and when I set it to the programme it will lock but nothing else happens, the lock light does not come on properly even though the door is locked. I then cannot change the programme to a different one. When I turn the machine on now it will just lock the door and seems to be stuck on one programme. The machine is nearly 8 years old. Any ideas what might be the problem.

Sadly as you did not give us a model number we cannot do more than guess. At eight years old it might be worth checking the motor brushes, assuming it has a brush gear motor of course.
