I have a Proline CDW400P compact dishwasher. It’s been great, overall, but has recently been aborting part-way through a run giving an error code (in the form of light flashing) that the manual explains as being “longer drain time”. I’ve tried checking the position of the drain hose as it wends it’s way to the connector under the sink, no kinks and no extreme elevation. I’ve tried running water through said hose when disconnected (seems fine, though some gritty black bits came out).

Now it’s aborting very early in the program – before water is heated and sprayed. I understand that because the drain hose is empty it has to prime its drain pump (apparently – I understand all those words but not why they lead to that conclusion, I’m going on what I read), but by the feel of the drain hose I’m not even sure it’s filled it with water before it aborts. The other possible error codes relate to filling with water and heating the water, and it’s definitely the drain code that’s flashing.

I’m almost at a loss, so I’m asking for any ideas or guidance people can give. It occurs to me that it could be a pump problem, and I guess that effectively means getting a new dishwasher (which would be really bad), unless the pump is accessible and easy to clear like the one in my washing machine.

Quick update: I realised that the drainage hose didn’t feel like it had filled on the last attempt to run it, so I took a wild guess and filled the area under the filter inside the dishwasher by hand, and then tried running it empty – it hasn’t been successful yet, but it’s gotten further than it did before – I heard the drain gurgle a little, the drainage pipe moved about as if it were filling, and now it’s actually running and spraying water inside (to judge by the noises). I’ve no idea why it would need this doing, and I don’t yet know if it will be working again fully, but it’s a bit strange…

Further update: it finished the quick cycle after I pre-loaded it with water, but the next time I started it it failed again. Put it on a normal program, with dishes, and it failed seemingly part way through washing (still detergent foam inside) with the same error.

Now failing to finish any program whatever we do. Have an engineer coming next week (fortunately still under warrantee). Hopefully it will get sorted out. The people on the phone didn’t put us through the troubleshooting/diagnostic stuff because of all the things we’d already tried (I didn’t mention the filling with water, though, didn’t seem relevant).
