ParticipantHello my friends, it has been years since I needed your help!. Last night my small chest freezer died. It is a “Proline cf6-37p serial number 03305910”. It lives in a understairs cupboard.
We noticed yesterday that it was no longer freezing.
It has been emptied and dried out since then.
Now here is where I am stuck…. I switch it on and hear a hmmmmn (not loud but a hmmmmn). Red light, on the front is on. The green light is on, but dim.
I’ll be greatfull for any help.August 29, 2018 at 9:58 pm #457604electrofix

Sorry Dave, I’ve only just seen your post. I’m more used to cars, therefore … What part is the compressor? Is it the big bowl?

what I am thinking is
if the compressor is warm after freezer has been plugged in for a bit then this means its a compressor problem. these come in 2 flavours
1 starting device problems some use a relay some use a capacitor
2 the compressor itselffault 1 you have a slight chance of repair
fault 2 its scrapDave

Thanks Dave, I’ll pull it out from under the stairs tomorrow and check for a warming compressor, then go from there. I’ll let you know.

Hi Dave, pulled out the freezer, switched it back on. An hour later after the freezer hmmmmn’ed on and off the compressor was positively toasty.
Could you please advise me of the next step…September 2, 2018 at 9:22 pm #457609electrofix

well that rules out the simple stuff. We now know its not a thermostat
could be a starting device on the side of the compressor.
some compressors use a capacitor to start the compressor but don’t know if you unit doesproblem here is you would have to buy the components to try them. A professional engineer would have test components to try but my feeling is give up and get another one.
with a new appliance you would have a full guarantee and to add weight to this Proline is a comet only brand and they ceased trading in 2012 which makes the unit over 6 years old at bestDave

Thanks for the honest advise. I have already replaced the freezer now, I just don’t like being beaten. I will scour the compressor for a cap, or relay. I will grab my multimeter and test the daylights out of it. I can’t stand the throw out society we have become, if I can make it work for a less fortunate person then I will. Thanks for all your help as always, defo my number 1 website for help. Thank you.
