thanks guys for all your input so it is a waste of time replacing these belts. is there any other dryers that have this problum breaking new belts. the are murder to get round the motor shaft. how come the first belt lasted a year or more. is it when the play comes into the drum that the belt breaks so you need to make sure before you replace the belt that it is going to be a satisfactory repair. fasetester. 🙂

I reckon it’s a combination of things on these, Fase. The belt is fantastically tight, the casing isn’t particularly rigid and I’m sure it buckles. The back bearing will send the the drum cock-eyed and as soon as the drum starts to drag everything starts to labour to keep it turning. Just a poor design.
Quite why the pattern part suppliers haven’t done something simple like bring out an 1880H9MAEL belt, I don’t know. The extra 20mm would ease the tension a little and probably solve most of the problems.

without the special belt fitting tool you will struggle (hpt5600266) whatever way you look at it the loss of the jockey pulley was a c*** idea.

When a belt snaps on one of these darn machines chances are the rear drum shaft bearing is also knackered. 9 times out of 10 they are a flippin’ liability to mess with. Fitting the new wider grooved belt will certainly create problems not only in fitting (the fitting tool mentioned is an absolute must for that by the way) but a week or month or two it will fail again (snap) unless the drum and bearings kit is fitted as well.
Wrestling with these heaps of tin and plastic is a tragic mistake and best avoided IMHO 👿

thanks martin for your reply. so if i go to repair one of these and the belt has snapped new bearing kit plus belt or the drum has to be changed as well. which would probably mean scrap. as all that would be the price of a new tumble dryer do the hotpoint creda give the same problum fasetester.

Participantok, as requested
the condenser dryers have a tensioning pulley, thing is, theres no spring, and its rigid, and yes, they do break
dont change a great deal of belts… im far too busy fitting fans/mod kits/heaters/capacitors/timers/pumps/rear bearings/motors
the vented dryer idea is a bit hit and miss.. the belt is so unbeleivably tight
my tip for the belt?
(dont laugh)
place the belt over your head, around your shoulders, stand on the belt, and with as much force as you can, stretch the belt as much as you can
it does help, and makes it easier to fit?the common reason for the belt breaking is the fact that the drum drops of the front bearings and jams, i tend to put 2, sometimes 3 washers on the shaft to try and push the drum as far forward as possible
best thing i would advise to the independants is to make the customer aware that the belt is a common problem, and offer to fit the belt at cost if the belt should break reasonably quickly? otherwise, you could be well out of pocket im sure if you charged them £15 just for a belt, they gotta be happy right?
would that be fair? feedback guys?May 29, 2008 at 7:56 pm #252873fasetester
