At present I have £1 million cover, which seems quite a lot to me but it looks like the concensus is that I should have £2 million? ❓

To be part of repairs@ you must have £2million cover anyway! 😉

It does seem a lot but when you read about succesfull claiments being awarded in excess of £1 million for a permanent disabilty what would happen (and I hope it never does to anyone) if you accidently killed someone ?

Yes I noticed that when I was going through the forms last night. I also noticed the bit about taking away scrap parts. At present I leave these with the customer to dispose of since it saves me having a licence to transport waste materials. On balance I value the freedom to run my business my own way and therefore do not feel ready to sign the UKW Charter.

Which version have you got Phidom ?
It’s been ammended:
Any used parts and packaging will be left tidy for inspection and correct disposal by the customer, in line with current legislation

Whilst you may have misunderstood the part about scrap parts (or possibly are reading an earlier version), I value and respect your sentiments as to how you run your business, and that’s fine 🙂
However, as Dave pointed out the need for you to consider increasing your Public Liability cover. I must add that reading throughout the clauses within the UKW Members Charter, there is nothing within them that would not be implemented by any business as a matter of course anyway. It represents nothing other than acceptable guidelines for trade members to be willing to accept in order they may be allowed access to the lucritive extra business Repairs@ will give 😀
Can’t be a bad idea to reconsider 😉

This quote taken from Jim’s post way back in 2005. But for me my PL insurance is due for renewal once again and I surfing the wonderweb for quotes. My current insurers ‘Groupama’ renewal quote is the same as last year which after all can’t be bad. But I’m all for seeking a cheaper or more effective alternative ATEOTD. 😉
No excess has got to be a winner and Jim’s policy sounds the way to go? Even if the annual premium is slightly higher than I’m paying already (£82.55 in fact but with £250 excess 😥 )
I’m sick of filling out on-line forms, can someone help me out here? 🙂

Renewed mine in September, still only £110, not altered for years.
£2million cover, no excess.

Never made a claim in my life. Don’t know if that makes a difference.SteveMine was only £80 with gas cover, as long as I dont use my gas bottle more than 15{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of the time in my work…… which of course I dont 😈

Well thanks to Jim I decided to go for the CIS cover. 😉
However they do have a basic £100 excess on many claims and a £250 excess applies if the use of heat or sparks is the cause or damage to underground cables or pipes being involved? The policy was £110 some £27.45 more than the cheapest quote I could get but the £100 excess swung it for me. 🙂
The guy I spoke to at CIS did say that in some cases there was no excess to pay, right enough, but I’m not sure until he sends me the documentation whether it applies to some of the risks we face in our day to day activities? 😕 I need to thumb through that small print I guess? 😉
The likelyhood these days of damaging customers floor coverings or kitchen furniture is pretty high and difficult to avoid sometimes. And the thought of having to shell out £250 on someones crappy lino doesn’t appeal to me. Fortunately for me I haven’t had any such claims against me ever so I have been both extremely lucky and extremely careful over the years. But knowing my luck it could happen tomorrow so I could be saving £150 by signing up to the CIS deal. Better safe than sorry I say! 8)
