    What is the purpose of the grey cover inside a microwave oven, its rectangular in shape and covers a cutout in the oven body? If this is missing, does it require immediate replacement?

    It’s the cover for the microwave inlet. It’s invisible to microwave radiation, but stops the ingress of food detritus. Fatty deposits being splashed into the duct represent a fire hazard, so yes, the cover should be in place at all times.
