Sounds like a brilliant idea. I think my public liability insurance has a clause in excluding blowlamp use so it may be wise to check that and take extra care if you’re not covered. Or upgrade the insurance.
I once had trouble getting an old flask open to replace the inside vacuum bit. After much grunting, I finally got it to move by applying hot and cold water alternately. Just a thought.

You definately need to check your PL insurance before doing this in a customers premises, every policy I looked at when renewing mine a few weeks back had a clause about not using Blowlamps. If you added blowlamp use the price went up a fair bit.

That’s set me wondering about my little gas powered soldering iron. Actually, I don’t use it when out because it runs out of gas so quick it doesn’t give you time to do much. Came from Halfords, bit of a rip-off I think but I had some vouchers given to me and they were burning a hole in my pocket. Which is probably about all this gas powered soldering iron is capable of.

Have you seen the Cold heat battery powered irons from Maplin?
Theyr’e pretty good quick heat up time & about 50-60 normal joints on 1 set batts, or the rechargeable ones are pretty good for board work. Had 1 of these for years when I was doing on site Electronic repairs.April 19, 2009 at 12:35 am #283398leavemetogetonwithit

I see they’ve got a little Antex thing which works off 3 AA’s. maplin
Looks a bit cheap quality from the pic but if it wil do even 10 joints on a charge that would be OK.

Unfortunately that’s not re-chargeable so could get a bit pricey on Alkalines if you use regularly. Got to be fair I bought an Iroda gas iron from Maplins a while back & not had any problems with that 1, variable output from 20-60 watts so can be useful for wiring repairs on the car etc.
But I allways carry a 30 watt mains iron as well just in case I forget to buy gas. 🙂April 19, 2009 at 9:14 am #283400garn

Mike.No good to us mate, apparently only 6 watts. Also checked out the cold heat irons, they reckon you get approx 700 joints on 1 set of batteries.
Downside to this is they can kill Electronic components like ICs quite easily so not really much cop again.April 20, 2009 at 9:57 pm #283402burns

Try and find the torx bits specified for use with impact drivers. Much better and designed to take a bit more stick.

The Only way I Could Get Round This On the Job.
I Purchased a nice Little Blowlamp From my Local Plum Centre
if you Flash Some Heat On The Bolt Wait 3 Seconds Have Your Torx bit And Driver Ready And Gloves (HOT) Turn The Bolt Slightly If Tight Repeat The Second Time.
Don’T Forget to remove The Paddles.
I Can Guarantee This Will Work.garn… 🙂

Nice 1 Fixit: Had a heat gun for a couple of years & honestly never thought of using it to heat bolts up, Methinks i must be getting past it 😆

Probably a bit of a silly question but hasd anyone tried “Easy-Outs” or “Stud Removers” on these little beuties ? – They have a reverse thread that can be “tapped” into the screw so you have more purchase on the bolt !
Just a thought ! 😈

As Far as the Torx bolts on Hotpoint/Zanussi Spiders go I always drill the heads off with a decent drill bit, takes a minute and replace with new bolts. Like the Indesit/Ariston Rear Pulley Torx bolts that are retained with a dash of Adhesive, I use a sharp medium cold chisel to make a slot on the bolt, then gibe it one or two blows and it shifts which then allows removal with the right size torx bit.
