Do triacs have current maximum ratings?

Specifically, Hoover modules (e.g. 97920623) the TR5 triac switches the pump on and off and when the pump jams for any length of time it can blow the triac as well. 🙁

Bench testing a brand new Hoover (Askoll) pump draws 20 watts, under load that increases to 25 watts and jamming the impellor the wattage shoots up to 37 watts! Testing the old pump that blew the triac in question and it gives almost identical readings (21w, 25w and 36w in fact). 😕

The conclusion drawn by me so far is that the triac isn’t up for the job and replacing it for a higher tolerance might be an option? Dunno?????

See if you can find a number on the old triac. Go to http://www.rswww.com and tap it into the search engine there. If you can find the same or similar you’ll get a whole spec sheet for it. Then just look for a slightly bigger one.
    Mike.
